I wrote about "Church of the Wind
" in my last journal entry and got some questions from a friend.
There are two churches called "Church of the Wind" in Japan. The church in the left photo was designed by Tadao Ando who is one of the most famous Japanese architects. It's located in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. On the other hand, the church in the right photo was designed by Kazuo Matuso from Nihon Sekkei,Inc who also teaches at our university as a part-time instructor. This is also located in Hyogo Prefecture, in Ashiya City.
In general, if we talk about "Church of the Wind", it's about Mr. Ando's design, because it was built before Mr. Matsuo's church, and recognized as "Church of the Wind" by many people. In spite of the fact that there had been a church called "Church of the Wind", the question remains as to why Mr. Matsuo still named his church the same. According to him, when he and his client were considering the name, he mentioned the existing church. However, the client who is also the parish priest wanted to call it "Church of the Wind" anyway. It seems that the church had already used the name "Church of the Wind" even before they started constructing it. They gave it the same name, and thus came into existence two churches named "Church of the Wind".
