第三十四弾: Beirut + Final Fantasy ライブ ＠ Bowery Ballroom

This night's show and the one I went to see the next night were quite amazing. For this gig I went to see Beirut who is some young dude who lives in New York, making Eastern-European sounding music.

By the way, apparently for his performance the night before, the members of Arcade Fire, the National and Grizzly Bear showed up and played with them. Sufjan Stevens was also seen in the crowd. Now if you happen to know who they are, that's some incredible line-up right there. Only in New York will something like that happen.

この晩とその次の夜に見たライブは凄く良かった。このライブではニューヨーク在住の若いアーティスト、Beirutの演奏を見た。東ヨーロッパ風の音楽を作る人。

ちなみに前日のライブではなんとArcade FireとThe NationalとGrizzly Bearのメンバーがステージに飛び入り参加したらしい。そしてSufjan Stevensが観客として来ていたと。前述のアーティスト達を全員知っているなら分かるだろうけど、とんでもなく豪華な顔合わせだ。ニューヨークならではのハプニング。



The opening act was Final Fantasy. Sounds familiar doesn't it. On a web article, it was pointed out that he "put himself at a distinct disadvantage by naming his own project Final Fantasy. Google it: dude's official website doesn't come up untill page seven, such is the interweb might of the RPG juggernaut with which he shares his name...Squaresoft has yet to send a cease-and-desist order." It was somewhat strange when the writer of the article exhibited his apparently vast knowledge of the FF game series.

前座はファイナルファンタジー。どこかで聞いたことのあるような名前。音楽記事にてこのような文を目にした：「彼は自分をファイナルファンタジーと呼ぶことによって非常に不利な状況に身を置いてしまった。グーグルでその単語を調べると7ページ目にてやっと彼の公式ホームページへのリンクを見つけられるだろう。某有名RPGと同じ名前を共有してしまったが故の結果である（略）…スクェアソフトからはまだ苦情は来ていないらしい」。取りあえずレビュー記事にて筆者が妙にゲームについての知識を披露していたのが気になった。

His name is Owen Pallett. He plays the violin and loops it to create music. Supposedly he started playing the violin to impress the guys. His album "He Poos Clouds" won the Polaris Prize (Canadian equivalent to Mercury Music Prize). Apparently, the title is meant as a "preposterous statement of devotion, like 'you're farts don't stink'." I read that his "celebrity" status got some higher up people to help him when he was denied health insurance in Canada.

彼の名前はオーウェン・パレット。バイオリンを弾きながらその音をループする事によって音楽を作る。バイオリンを弾き始めた理由は「他の男を魅了したかったから」だとか。彼のアルバム「彼は雲を排泄する」（ただしpooは幼児言葉）はカナダにてマーキュリーミュージック賞に匹敵するポラリス賞を受賞した。タイトルについては「度を越えた心酔・献身さを表したかった」と言っている。ちなみにインタビュー記事に書かれていた例え：「君のオナラ臭くないね」。アイドルの熱狂的ファンや宗教の盲目的信者なんかもこのカテゴリーに入るのだろうか。ところでカナダではそれなりに有名人となった彼は政府の役員などもファンに付けたようだ。ツアー続きで本国滞在日数が足りず、健康保険の使用を認めてもらえなかった時に助けてくれたとか。



When asked about his views on the game Final Fantasy, he replied: "I like the idea of it, this big gay thing. The games are ridiculously overwrought and convoluted emotionally," which he claims he also applies to his music. One of his tracks is also titled "I'm afraid of Japan."

同名のゲームについて質問された際、彼は「良いコンセプトだよ。とてもゲイだ。呆れるほど凝っていて登場人物の感情も複雑過ぎるんだよね」と答えた。そういった視点を自分の音楽にも取り入れようと努力しているらしい。彼の曲には「日本が怖い」という曲名のものもある。











Beirut members showed up during FF gig to support FF, Owen Pallete showed up to during Beirut gig to support Beirut.

Final Fantasy演奏中はBeirutのメンバーが参加し、Beirut演奏中はFFのオーウェンが助けに入り、お互い協力していた。



So here's Beirut. The frontman is Zach Condon.

そしてこちらがBeirut。フロントマンの名前はザック・コンドン。



Condon is a regular Francophile. Beirut's second album is heavily French-oriented and there are numerous videos on the internet of Beirut performing songs live in the streets of Paris. During the gig he starts speaking in French to which an audience replies: "viva France" and of course Condon replied with an enthusiastic "VIVA FRANCE." Then he proclaims: "I don't mean to be political but...France won the World Cup." The French crowd goes wild. Imagine if he'd said that in a room full of Italian soccer fans. There would have been blood.

コンドンは極度の親仏家。というよりただのフランスミーハーだと思う。セカンドアルバムはフランスっぽさが溢れているしインターネット上では多くのパリ路上ゲリラライブ映像を見られる。ライブ中にいきなりフランス語で話し始めると客から「フランス万歳」の声が上がり、それに対して嬉しそうに「フランス万歳」と応えるコンドン。更に「政治の話をするつもりはないけど…フランスはワールドカップで優勝したんだぜ」と突然言い出す始末。歓声が沸いてたけどもしイタリアサッカーファンで埋め尽くされた部屋でそんな事言ってたらと思うと…　血を見ずに済んでよかったね、コンドン。



A lot of what Condon was saying was barely audible because his voice was muffled. Possibly drunk or high.

声がくぐもっていて聞こえにくかったから何を言っているのか非常に聞き取りづらかった。多分酔ってたかドラッグでハイな状態だったんだと思う。まあそれが当たり前かの様に書いてしまうのもどうかと思うが。



They sure liked the festive atmosphere. And confetti. They like confetti a lot. They had a cracker-gun that kept spewing out lots of confetti and at the end of the gig, a huge shower of confetti came pouring down from above, covering everyone in confetti.

Beirutの人たちは祭り騒ぎが好きなようで。紙ふぶきを大量に使用してた。どこから持ってきたのか紙ふぶきを噴出すおもちゃの銃まで取り出してはしゃいでた。最後には演奏終了と共に天井から大量の紙ふぶきが舞い降りてきて全ての人間が色鮮やかに彩られた。正に「パーティー帰り」の格好。紅白？



At one point Condon lifted his trumpet and let a load of saliva ooze out of the instrument. People were disgusted.

途中、曲が終わった後おもむろにトランペットを持ち上げたコンドンは楽器から大量の唾液を排出した。流石にこれに対しては観客は気持ち悪がってた。



There were rather long pauses between songs. Condon also made the crowd anxious by strumming his ukulele for about a second then stopping just to agitate the crowd. Audience "do it do it do it do it" Condon "I'm gonna do it anyways."

曲間はコンドン本人に「気まずいな」と言わせる程長かった。その上わざとウクレレを少し演奏して止めたりと観客を焦らす行為までする。その挙句完全に楽器を置いてしまうものだから観客に「演れ！演れ！」と急かされるもののそれに対し「（急かされようと急かされまいと）どうせ演奏するんだから」と答えるコンドン。



And the much awaited Postcards From Italy performance was rewarded with an extended ukulele solo.

そしてようやく演奏したくれた皆さんお待ちかねの「イタリアからの絵葉書」はウクレレソロを延長するというサービス付きで披露された。



At the end of the gig they brought on stage a whole bunch of trumpet players to create a huge trumpet troop and blasted the hell out of them.

最後の曲はステージ上に何人ものトランペット演奏者がぞろぞろと表れ、全員でトランペット軍団として演奏した。

第三十三弾: Spank Rock ライブ ＠ Virgin Megastore Union Square

One day after school I stopped by at the large Virgin Megastore located at Union Square to find out that Spank Rock would be performing there shortly. I decided to witness Baltimore's hip-hop / house group perform.

ある日学校帰りにユニオン・スクエアのヴァージンメガストアに寄ったらスパンクロックがインストアライブを行うらしき事を知ったので飛び入り参加した。スパンクロックはバルティモア出身のヒップホップ／ハウス系グループ。



Apparently this in-store DJ Set was for celebrating the release of their live mix CD on the Fabric mix series. The Fabric mix series is a compilation album released monthly by the London nightclub Fabric.

ファブリック・ミックスシリーズにて自分らのミックスアルバムを発売した記念のDJライブだったらしい。ちなみにファブリック・ミックスシリーズはロンドンのナイトクラブ「ファブリック」が毎月出してるコンピレーションアルバム。　



I thought the mix was quite young-generation and beginner friendly with many modern hit tunes by famous artists such as Modeselektor, Hot Chip, CCS, Daft Punk, and LCD Soundsystem.

マニアックなエレクトロニカや古いヒップホップなどを多様せず、Modeselektor, Hot Chip, CCS, Daft Punk そして LCD Soundsystemなど近代の有名アーティストの曲をミックスしてる事から若い層の人間やそんなに詳しくない人間でも十分楽しめる構成になっていた。



Multiple Macs. Covered in stickers. Nowadays you can't talk about music creation without the use of a computer.

テーブルがマックだらけ。しかもシールだらけ。今の時代、音楽製作にコンピューターが欠かせないのはもうデフォルトだね。

Its been over an year since my last entry. I'll try and upload reports of gigs that I attended after that.

最後の更新から一年以上経ってしまった。時間が経つのは早いねぇ。残ってるレポを出来るだけアップしようと思う。

第三十二弾: シュウ・シュウ ライブ ＠ Bowery Ballroom

An oddly tense and dramatic show took place this night at the Bowery Ballroom where performances by club killers such as LCD Soundsystem, Junior Boys, Fujiya Miyagi has been rocking the house lately.

最近LCD SoundsystemやJunior BoysそしてFujiya Miyagiなど話題のクラブキラーバンドがニューヨークのナイトライフを盛り上げてるBowery BallroomにてXiu Xiuの独特な緊張感ある前衛的ショウが披露された。

シュウシュウのポラロイド・プロジェクトその3。さあ今ならXiu Xiuのスキャンダラスなツアー写真集に君も載れる！不気味な写真も一杯あるよ！



One of the two opening act bands was Shearwater, which was formed by two members of Okkervil River as a side project. The frontman's singing was kind of similar to how Xiu Xiu frontman, Jamie Stewart, sings.

As funny as it may sound, Xiu Xiu actually covers and are covered / remixed by other bands a lot. They have several albums of cover / covered / remixed material, and their recent release is a double CD feature with guests like Larsen and Kid 606. Their split 7" with Devendra Banhart is one of my favorite. Their version of "Don't Cha" is a must hear, you will never be able to listen to the Pussycat Dolls' version. Here's an interesting comment on that track:

"Stewart's elegantly industrial handling of that fabled track is going to be called "weird," but only because he did it. Some folks will resent Stewart's take as "artsy," whereas the Pussycat Dolls' was "pop," and thus supposedly not a thinkpiece. I see similar responses when, in my day job as a teacher, I have my students read Joe Wenderoth's Letters to Wendy's in which a man makes love to a Frosty. Students claim to be appalled by such perversity. Then I inquire how many of them own the DVD of that hilarious romp about the boy fucking an American pie, and their hands go up like I'd asked them who wanted five dollars"

二人のOkkervil Riverメンバーがサイド・プロジェクトとして結成したShearwaterというバンドが前座の一つだった。フロントマンの歌い方がXiu Xiuのジェイミー・スチュアートになんとなく似てた。

意外にもXiu Xiuは他のアーティストをカバーしたり他のアーティストにカバーされたりリミックスされたりする事が多い。そういった内容のCDも幾つか出していて、つい最近LarsenやKid606などのアーティストとコラボしたCD二枚組みが発売された。個人的にDevendra Banhartとのスプリット7インチCDが好き。そしてアノ「Don't Cha」までカバーしてるんだけど、Xiu Xiuバージョンを聞いたらもうPussycat Dollsバージョンは聞けない。このカバーについて面白いコメントを見つけた：

「誰もが知るこの名曲をスチュアートは繊細でインダストリアルなタッチでカバーするのだが、一般的に彼のバージョンは『変』なカバーと言われるだろう。それは『彼がカバーしたから変になるのは当たり前』という先入観のせいだ。彼のバージョンを『アートぶってる』、Pussycat Dollsのバージョンを『ポップ』（つまり深く考える必要が無い）と決め付ける人もいるだろう。これに似た反応を私は教師として体験している。生徒にジョー・ウェンデロス著「ウェンディーへの手紙」を読ませると、フロスティー（雪だるま？）とセックスする男の話を変態でおぞましいと非難するが、その同じ生徒達の何人がアメリカン・パイをファックしてる男のDVDを所持しているか聞くと、まるで『5ドル欲しいやつは手を挙げろ』とでも言ったかのように次々と手が挙がっていく」

Although some people seem not to like "Boy Soprano", I was looking forward to hearing it live and thought it was absolutely great performed live.

A lot of their songs actually turned out to be more grand-scale than the CD versions when performed live. Yet, the songs still retain their sense of pain, sorrow, emptyness, tension and insanity. Sounds like a fuckin emo blog now.

一部の人には「Xiu Xiuらしくない」と不評の「Boy Soprano」をライブで観るのがとても楽しみだった。個人的に気に入ったトラックだから。ライブで聴くと鬼気迫る迫力。最後の方の「ボォオオーーイソプラノォオオーー」の叫びも非常にドラマチック。

ライブでは多くの曲がCDに比べて壮大な雰囲気がプラスされていた。それでも元の非痛感、悲壮感、空虚感、緊張感、そして狂気をしっかりと残していた。……中二病患者が大好きな単語ベスト５じゃないか。



On the topic of remixing and Junior Boys, the new Junior Boys remix album is terrific

Some dude in the audience kept calling Jamie Stewart "Ian Curtis", while other audience members told him he's long dead. Stewart's haunting vocals are reminiscent of the late singer and Xiu Xiu actually named one of their songs "Ian Curtis Wish List" and also did a cover of Joy Division's "Ceremony". It's very different from Galaxie 500's take on that song. Xiu Xiu turns it into a high-speed, synthy track.

リミックスとJunior Boysで思い出したけどJunior Boysの新しいリミックスアルバムが満足度90％の良盤でした。

客の一人がずっとジェイミー・スチュワートの事を「イアン・カーティス」と呼んでいて、他の客が「死んでるだろ」ってツッコんでた。実際スチュアートの幽霊ボーカルはイアン・カーティスに似ていて、「イアン・カーティスの願い事表」とかいう曲を作ったりジョイ・ディビジョンの「Ceremony」をカバーしたりしている。同じ曲をカバーしたGalaxie 500のバージョンとは全く違ってスピード感あるシンセたっぷりの曲に仕上げてる。



The band is unbelievably energetic when performing live. After every song, you could hear Stewart gasping for air because he is completely out of breath. He gulps down whatever liquid it was in that cup after each song, and after the penultimate song he even started gargling with that stuff. Never seen anyone gargle live.

演奏中テンション上げまくり。あまりの激しさに一曲終わる毎にスチュアートが息を切らして「ぜぇーはぁー」という重い呼吸音が会場に響く。そしてコップに入った謎の液体をがぶ飲みし、次の曲の演奏に入る。最終曲前には謎の液体で生ウガイを披露。流石にウガイ・ライブを見るのは初めてだ。



Very mental stuff.

病的な内容の曲が多い。



They got into some trouble when they were touring a little while ago when they found a billboard with rearrangable letters and so went ahead and rearranged them to "George W is HIV to America". After all, they do hint their concern for political issues: i.e. their song "Support Our Troops (Black Angels OH!)"

前のツアーの時ちょっとしたイタズラのせいで彼らはトラブルに巻き込まれてしまったらしい。まあ大したトラブルにはならなかったっぽいけど、道中どっかのデッカイ看板の文字を勝手に「ジョージ・Wはアメリカにとってのエイズだ」に置き換えたからという。一応「私達の軍隊を応援しよう（ブラック・エンジェルズ・おぉう！」みたいな曲もあるし、ポリティカルな事にも強い関心があるのだろう。



「ボソ…ボソ…ボソボソ…ボソ………………………………………シュウウウううーー！！！しゅゅぅぅぅううううーーー！！！！シィィぃぃユゥうううううウーshiiiuuuuuuuUUUUUうううううううう！！！！！！あｂぁえあｄいう＃！’か！！………はぁはぁ……はぁはぁ……」

第三十一弾: ブロック・パーティー ライブ ＠ ユナイテッド・パレス・シアター

This well known post-punk indie rock band from the U.K. totally rocked the upper half of New York City. And I mean ROCKED. Details on the degree of rocking will be specified below.

イギリス産ポストパンクインディロックバンドBloc Partyがニューヨークマンハッタン島上半分を文字通り　震　撼　させた！詳細は下！



By the time I first found out that Bloc Party will be touring North America, all shows were already sold out, which dissappointed me greatly. Then drummer Matt Tong suffered a collapsed lung (as I wrote in the battles gig report) and had to cancel all the New York shows, rescheduling them to this date, so I was damn lucky to be able to get these tickets.

The tickets sold out almost instantaneously.

最初に北アメリカツアーの事を知った時には既に全てのチケットが売り切れてしまっていて「アッーー！」ってな感じだったんだけど、ドラマーのマット・トングが肺を痛めてツアーを中止（バトルズレポ参照）したおかげでなんと新たにスケジュールされたニューヨーク公演のチケットを購入する事に成功。マット・トングには悪いけど、ラッキーーー！！！

チケット販売はほぼ瞬殺。

So it's time to fuckin rock n'....



...Holy shiza...although this isn't exactly Bloc Party material...it is AWESOME!! In fact, it's kickass to be able to see a band like Bloc Party perform at a venue like this.

ブロックパーティーの雰囲気と違うけどこれはsugeeeeee!!むしろ逆にこういう場所でブロックパーティーってのがイイ！！
ユナイテッド・パレス・シアターが名前通り正に「宮殿」だったとは…

Apparently it has been recently rennovated to accomodate rock shows. According to Albert Hammond Jr. (guitarist of Strokes, I'll refer to him as Almond) who appeared as one of the opening acts, this is the "first rock show at this venue".

ロック系のライブに対応するためについ最近改装したんだとか。前座の一人、アルバート・ハモンド・ジュニア（＊ストロークスのギタリスト、以下アーモンド）が「今日のライブがここでの初めてのロックライブだ」とか言ってた。



Some dude asked me after Almond finished playing: "was that Broken Social Scene? Wait, BSS has a girl in their member right?".

When I saw Almond playing, I was thinking he looked just like the Strokes' guitarist and sounded like a Strokes rip-off...and found out afterwards that it actually was him.

客の一人がアーモンド演奏終了後、「なあ、今のブロークンソーシャルシーン？いや、BSSは女の子いるよな？」って聞いてきた。

アーモンドバンド見てる時、「なんかストロークスのギタリストっぽいなー、曲もストロークスコピーバンドみたい…」とか思ってたら本人だった。



The crowd literally roared to life as soon as Bloc Party came out.

Bloc Party rocked the venue so hard that numerous people (including the band members) felt pieces of the ceiling fall on their head. I'm guessing this is another pre-war era building like most buildings in New York.

メインのブロックパーティーが出てきた瞬間会場全体が歓声で揺れた。

バンドメンバーを含む多数の人間があまりの激しい演奏に天井の一部が崩れて頭に降ってきたと報告。改装したとは言え古い建物だから…多分ニューヨークのほとんどのビルと同じように戦前のモノなんだろう。



Before the gig the venue DJ spinned "North American Scum" by LCD Soundsystem, which is a nice track to play to a huge crowd of North Americans. BTW, LCD Soundsystem was rocking the bottom half of New York at about the same time this show was taking place. LCD's new album is great.

ライブ始まる前にDJがLCD Soundsystemの"North American Scum"（「クズ北米人」）を流してたのは笑った。会場を埋める三千人以上の北米人に向かって。そしてブロックパーティーが演奏してる同時刻、ニューヨークマンハッタン島下半分では他でもないLCD Soundsystemがお祭り騒ぎを起こしていた。ちなみにLCDの新譜はとても良いデース。



United Palace Theatre was actually located all the way up in Harlem. I wasn't exactly sure where it was at first until I passed the Yankees Stadium and realized it's in Harlem.

この宮殿がハーレムにあるって事を着くまで全然知らなかった。行く途中ヤンキーススタジアムを通り越して初めて、「ああ、ハーレムにあるのか」って気づいた。

フロントマン、ケレ・オケレレ：「わざわざハーレムまで観に来てくれてありがとう」



I personally really liked the flow from "Waiting For The 7:18" to "Banquet". That raised a good number of goosebumps and roars from the crowd. It's also interesting that those two songs are each taken from their two albums. Transition from new song to old song.

個人的に「Waiting For The 7:18」から「Banquet」への流れがかなりツボった。神がかってる演出に観客も鳥肌立ちまくり＆大歓声。新アルバムの曲からファーストアルバムの曲へ繋がる構成という点でも面白い。



They tried a similar transition technique from "So Here We Are" to "Like Eating Glass". "Like Eating Glass" is an excellent opener and closer.

似たような切り替えテクを「So Here We Are」から「Like Eating Glass」にて行ってた。「Like Eating Glass」はオープニングとしてもクロージングナンバーとしても盛り上がる。



It's pretty obvious but all the photos used for this report are taken from various online sources. But what's with all these professional level gig photos online?! I mean, it seems like the people who posted these photos are normal, non-photography-oriented people...

バレバレだろうけどこのレポに掲載されてる写真は全てインターネッツで見つけた他人様のモノです。しかし普通の客が取ってるハズなのにプロ級の写真ばっかなのはnaze？！

The songs from the new album aren't that bad live. They're different from the first album stuff.

ライブで聴く新譜ソングも悪くない。ファーストアルバムとは違った雰囲気の曲が多いけど。



The lyrics for the song "Helicopter" are still being debated over whether it has political connotations or not. It is ambiguous enough for Okerere to say in an interview that "it's about this guy I knew a while ago...it's not about George Bush". Below are some of the lyrics:

"He's born a liar, he'll die a liar"
"Stop being so American...why can't you be more European"
"Gonna save the world"
"Just like his dad, same mistakes, somethings will never be different"
"Queuing up for some more junk food"
"Bastard child of guilt and shame"
"As if to say he doesn't like chocolate" (not caring about black community)

「Helicopter」の歌詞が政治的なメッセージを含んでるか否かについての議論は後を絶えない。歌詞自体は曖昧なのでオケレレがインタビューで「いやあの歌詞は知人についての事で、決してブッシュ大統領の事では無い」と言い張っても反論できない。ちなみに怪しい部分：

「彼は生まれた時から死ぬまで嘘つきだ」
「アメリカ人っぽく振舞うのは止めろ、なんでもっとヨーロッパ人っぽくなれないんだ」
「世界を救う」
「父親と同じ過ちを犯す、結局なにも変わらない」
「ジャンクフードをもっと食べるために列に並ぶ」
「罪悪感と恥にまみれた厄介者」
「チョコレートが嫌いとでも言うように」（＝黒人が嫌い）

The last encore song turned out to be one of my (and everyone's) favorite, HELICOPTER!!!!

Frontman turns the mic to the audience and makes everyone sing first few lyrics of the song.

客にマイクを向け最初の部分を歌わせるオケレレ。



After the gig there were numerous cop cars waiting outside the venue, which is typical with any gig, but it seemed there were more cop-mobiles than usual...is this the Harlem effect? Although recently there has been a lot of nasty crime around where I live, including a NYU student getting shot in my neighborhood, so can't really say it's any safer in downtown Mangattan.

外では多数のポリ車が待ち受けてた。それ自体はどのライブでも同じみの光景なんだけど、心なしか数が多いような…ハーレム効果？でも最近ウチの近所で大学の生徒が射殺されたりと物騒なんで、ダウンタウンマンハッタンの治安も良くはないか。

第三十弾: 絵馬・ポロック ライブ ＠ Mo Pitkin's House of Satisfaction

Here's Emma Pollock, former guitarist/singer of the now gone The Delgados. I used to listen to The Delgados when they still existed, and was surprised to find recently that Emma Pollock had been doing solo work.

二年前に解散したデルガドスの元ギター・ボーカル、エマ・ポロックのソロライブ。デルガドスが解散したと知った時はガッカリしたもんだ。でもエマ・ポロックがソロ活動していたとは全く知らなかった。



Her first solo album is actually not out yet. It should be released sometime soon, following her tour.

実はまだ彼女のファーストソロアルバムは未発売。近いうち発売されるハズだけど、ツアーのすぐ後とか。



"I thought Scotland was cold...wow" says Emma Pollock with a strong Scottish accent. Yes, New York is insanely cold this time of the year. Every day the temperature drops to negative 12 to 13 degrees celsius, and sudden snow storms erupt frequently. It really feels like you could die just walking outside.

She even wrote on her blog: "I thought Scotland was cold but this is ridiculous...we stepped outside to get a cab from the airport and got our second shock it was so cold"

「今までスコットランドは寒いと思ってたけど……比べ物にならないね」と強いスコットランド訛りで語るエマ・ポロック。この時期のニューヨークの気候はとんでもなく厳しい。毎日マイナス12,13℃まで気温が落ち、前を見て歩けないくらい強い吹雪もしょっちゅう吹き荒れる。あまりの寒さに外で叫ぶ人も少なくない。

彼女はブログにも「今までスコットランドは寒いと思ってたけどここの寒さは異常。空港から出たらあまりに寒くてビックリした」と書いている。



She also wrote on her blog that "American Airlines had lost Jamie and I's guitars and Jamie's personal luggage". So I think they borrowed their equipment from the venue or someplace else for this gig.

ブログには更に「なにかの手違いでアメリカン航空が私とジェイミーのギターと荷物を無くしてしまった」と書いてあるからこのライブで使った機材は借り物なんだろう。



She thanked the audience: "Thanks for listening to songs that you have never heard before". Like I said, her solo album isn't out yet. But I think she's getting a decent amount of attention. The Delgados never really acquired as many listeners as they wished to acquire which I think was a major cause for the band disbanding.

最後の方に「今まで一度も聞いたことの無い曲を聴いてくれてありがとう」と感謝の言葉が。上でも書いたように彼女のファーストソロアルバムはまだ出てない。その割にはいい感じに注目されてると思う。デルガドスが解散した一番大きな理由は多くの人に聞いてもらいたかったのにいつまでたっても知名度が低いままだったから。



This may be obvious but I must admit her songs sound very The Delgados-esque. The melodies of her songs evoke that of the band's songs. Her singing is still awesome.

当たり前かもしれないけど彼女の曲はとてもデルガドスっぽい。相変わらず歌も上手い。

"I should stop drinking on stage...oh fuckin drunk Scotts"

外伝第二弾: Hope Of The States ライブ ＠ Bangor University, Wales

Ex-Gig 2 will be on the HOTS gig I saw in Wales. Hope Of The States was a band that produced 2 albums and then decided to quit. They probably were aspiring to become a big-name band, but never worked, which is sort of understandable. They got some attention in Japan. Their songs were politically charged in an "antique" way, giving a sort of American Civil War-era feel to them.

外伝第二弾はウェールズにて見たHOTSライブレポ。SummerSonicに出演したりと、日本で取り上げられてたバンド。アルバムを二枚出したあと解散してしまった。多分メジャー系バンドになりたかったんだろうけど、無理だったみたい（なんとなく納得できるけど）。アメリカの南北戦争時代っぽい雰囲気を醸し出しつつポリティカルなテーマを扱ってたりしてた。



I was staying in England for a little while with my friend. I had gotten tickets to the HOTS gig which was in Wales, not knowing how far it was. The train that took us to Wales from London lasted for hours. All I could see outside of the train window were fields with sheeps.

ヨーロッパ（イタリア）にいる間、一時期友達とイギリスに滞在していた。その時ウェールズがかなり遠い事を知らず、HOTSライブのチケットを購入してしまった。ロンドンからウェールズまでの電車が長いこと長いこと。数時間かかった。その間車窓の外に見えるのはどこまでも続く平原と羊だけ。



And so we finally arrived. It was the middle of nowhere.

ようやく到着。本当になにも無い。



Welsh.

ウェールズ語。暗号にしか見えない。



The gig was at Bangor University, which is basically a castle-looking medieval complex built atop a mountain in the middle of nowhere.

ライブはバンガー大学で行われるとの事だったので取り合えず大学を探してたら、発見。中世の城らしき建造物が山の上に建ってました。



Seriously looks like a movie set for Harry Potter.

ハリーポッターの撮影でもしてそうな場所だった。



At night it looked even more ominous.

夜になると更におどろおどろしい雰囲気に。



We were the only Asians around.

流石にアジア人は俺達以外いなかった。



This is the entrance to the venue. Seemed like an University-owned club.

ライブ会場への入り口。大学付属のクラブっぽい。



Carrying all the equipment and instruments into the venue.

機材や楽器を会場に運び入れてるとこ。



The DJ's introduction of the band: "this next one is so active, I'm not sure if this hall is big enough to contain them".

演奏前のDJ：「次のバンドはあまりにアクティブなんでこの会場には収まり切れないんじゃないかな？！」



They had an interesting intro track to their gig, which sounded good as an intro to "The Black Amnesiacs". The intro is of some American kid randomly talking about the U.S. When the kid said something about someone becoming the president of the U.S., some audience cried out with a thick accent, "of America!".

演奏を始める直前に流してたイントロが面白かった。ニュートラルなアメリカ英語で米国について語る子供、という内容。その子供のスピーチの一部に「彼は合衆国大統領になった」というのがあったんだけど、それを聞いた客の一人が強いイギリス訛りで「アメリカの！」と反応してたのがなんとなく印象に残ってる。このイントロから一曲目「The Black Amnesiacs」への流れがカッコよかった。



Them English (Welsh) crowds and bands are both really energetic. Which is awesome, but in England gigs its often to the point of being rowdy and aggressive.

やっぱりイギリス（ウェールズ）のバンドと客はノリが良いねー。お祭り騒ぎ。イギリスのライブでは暴れ過ぎて荒れるって事がよくあるけど。



A few people persistently insisted the band on playing Static In The Cities for encore. Audience: "STATIC IN THE CITIES!!!STATIC IN THE CITIES!!!STATIC IN THE CITIES!!!"

アンコール曲としてStatic In The Citiesをどうしても演奏して欲しかった人が何人かいたようで、アンコールコール中ずっと曲名叫んでた。



I actually bootlegged this gig. Back in Florence, I got hold of a Greek friend who was one of the only people left in the dorm and borrowed his recordable MD player. I was then very very very fortunate to be able to borrow a portable mic from a really nice British dude who is my friend's friend's friend, in England. Before that dude let me borrow his mic, we were looking around everywhere to see if they sold any, and found absolutely none in stores.

色々と幸運が重なり、ブートレグする事に成功。休みでほとんど人がいないイタリアの寮に残ってたギリシャ人の友達が偶然録音式MDプレーヤーを持っていたので借りる。イギリスにて小さいマイクを探しまわるも見つからず諦めかけてた時、ナイスなイギリス紳士（友達の友達の友達）がなんと持っているから貸してくれると言うので、即レンタル。



They performed two "new songs" - "Black Stars Red Stars" and "Bonfires". The latter one was included in their second album.

「新曲」を二曲演奏してた。曲名は上。後者はセカンドアルバムに収録された。



Recently I downloaded a bootleg of one of their London gigs in which they covered Mad World, to my surprise. You could actually hear the audience saying "it's that song they used for Donny Darko".

ロンドンで行われたライブのブートレグを聞いていたら、そのライブにてMad Worldをカバーしていたという面白い事実が発覚。観客が「ほら、ドニーダーコで使ってた曲」とか言ってるのが更に面白い。



I flipped my camera at the frontman and started to take a movie when his guitar suddenly messed up, and he changed it to a new one. After the song, some dude in the crowd yelled out: "give me yo guitar!!!!", to which the frontman replied: "What? Can you have my guitar? It's fucked." Yeah, if he wanted a proper working guitar he'd probably buy it at a store.

デジカメをフロントマンに向けムービーを撮り始めた瞬間、彼のギターが故障してすぐさま新しいギターにチェンジ。曲が終わったあと客の一人が「そのギターよこせ！！！」と叫んだところ、フロントマンが「でもこれ完全にイカレてるよ」と返答。見事なボケ。わざと？



Since trains were not running by the time the show ended, we had to spend the night at Bangor. After some extensive searching in the cold, we somehow managed to find a small hotel run by probably the only Asian person in town. The Chinese man happily greeted us with a smile, and asked, "are you guys Chinese?".....No, we're both from the countries you hate. We told him where we're from and I still remember the majorly dissappointed "oh..." and the sad expression on his face.

ライブが終わる頃にはもちろんロンドン行き電車は終わっていて、一晩バンガーに泊まらなくてはならなくなった。寒い中ずっと宿を探していたら、なんとか小さいホテルを発見。多分街で唯一のアジア人であろう中国人のオーナーがとても嬉しそうに「君たち中国人？」と聞いてきたので、国籍を教えたら（翻訳：いいえ私達はあなたが嫌いな国々の出身ですよ）もの凄くテンション落として「ああ…」って。残念そうな顔してたな。



Can't believe we went through all that just to watch a tiny-ass live gig of a mediocre (sorry) band. It was lots of fun.

しかしそれほど大した事ないバンド（失礼）の単独小規模ライブ見に行くためだけに随分と苦労したもんだ。凄く楽しかった。



Bought dis t-shirt wit da union jack n' stars n' stripes merged together. One of my friends laughed when he saw me wearing this, thinking that I was trying to say that I was the hope for the United States.

こちらのユニオンジャックと星条旗が混ざったt-シャツを購入。コレを着てるのを見た友達の一人が笑ってた。どうやらコレを着る事によって俺が「アメリカ（ステーツ）の希望（ホープ）だ」と言ってる様に見えたらしい。



Also got hold of this limited CD thing. Lookie its got its own handwritten serial number.

なんか限定CDもゲット。手書き（殴り書き）シリアルナンバー付き。

Found this guitar store in Bangor town. The name Sam which I'm sure is the name of the frontman, was the point of interest.

街中でこんなギター屋を見つけた。「サムのギター屋」。偶然にも「サム」ってフロントマンの名前だから、なんとなく撮影。

Since it seems like this semester I would not be going to gigs
as frequently as I did before, here's some random shit. I will
start off by posting live gig reports for past gigs that I have been to
before coming to New York. Its your BEFORE IT ALL BEGAN PREQUEL-type thing.
Here it goes:

～外伝あらすじ～

2004年。
終末的な戦争が勃発し、文明世界は崩壊した。
それに伴い中東地域の油田は破壊されたために石油が枯渇し、
大地はそれをめぐって凶悪な暴走族が日夜殺し合いを繰り広げる
無法の荒野と化していた。更に謎のウィルスの蔓延により
怪物化した人間が暴走族たちを見つけては次々と
血祭りにあげていく。そんな中私はイタリアの人里離れた
ヴィラに非難した…霧の中不気味に佇む館……
そして、恐怖（サバイバルホラー）が始まる……

というわけで今学期はライブ行く回数が今までに比べて減ると思うからなんか適当に投稿。
取り合えずニューヨーク来る前に見たライブとかのレポを書いてみよう。

Florence, Italy

イタリア、フィレンツェ


After notifying New York University that I will be attending their school, I was ready to hit the Big Apple when a mysterious letter arrived from the university office.
Summary of letter - "if u wanna come ta NYU biatch, u gonna have ta study at our Florence campus fo a year. Peace."

入学する事を大学側に伝えた俺はニューヨーク生活を楽しみにしていた。
そんなある日大学から一通の手紙が届く。
手紙要約：「一年目はイタリアのフィレンツェ校。以上。」　…アレ？



Florence is pretty much a medieval timeslip. Furthermore, we stayed at a villa on top of a mountain, outside of the city center. You can see the immense discrepancy between the living environment we were in in Florence (above photo) and life in New York (photo below).

田舎というより「中世」そのまんまなフィレンツェの更に人里離れたヴィラにて生活（上記画像参照）。ニューヨークでの生活（下記画像参照）とのギャップがあり過ぎ。





So one day I went down to Rome with a friend to watch Kings Of Convenience perform. Getting to the venue was a real effort. The several hour long train ride to Rome isn't the bad part. What happend was we arrived at Rome only to get lost on our way to the venue.

We finally arrived. The picture above is the exterior of Auditorium Parco della Musica.

そのうちローマにてKings Of Convenienceが演奏するという情報を得たので友達と行く事に。しかし会場に着くまでが大変だった。ローマまでの長い列車旅はまだいい。実際ローマに着いたあと迷ってしまって会場に着くまで随分時間がかかった。

上の写真が会場「パルコ・デラ・ムジカ」の外見。



This is the interior. It had a nice classy atmosphere.

こちらが中身。ちょっと高級感がある良い雰囲気。



This is the "softest" gig I've ever been to. Everyone's relaxed on their seats and during the performance it's so quiet you can hear yourself breathe.

今まで見て来た中で一番ソフトなライブ。みんな席に座り、演奏中は自分の呼吸が聞こえるくらい静か。



The duo is from Norway and they make breezy, carefree acoustic music with a very small hint of Bossa Nova. There's a really nice remix album for their stuff.

気楽で爽やかなアコースティック音楽を作るノルウェー出身のデュオ。ほんのちょっとだけボサノバっぽい事もする。彼らの音楽をリミックスしたアルバムがまた結構いい。



They invited Feist as a guest vocalist on their second album and her singing matches exquisitely well with KOC's music. She sang some of the songs they recorded together at her gig (refer to Feist gig). It seems Feist is a big star amongst other bands (i.e. Broken Social Scene). Oh yeah, her much awaited new album is coming out April 23rd.

セカンドアルバムには数曲Feistをゲストボーカルとしてフィーチャーした曲がある。彼女の歌がまたKOCの音楽と凄くよく合っていてこのコラボレーションは一度だけでは勿体無いと思わせる程。Feistのライブではこれらの曲を彼女が演奏してた（Feistライブ参照）。しかしBroken Social SceneといいKOCといいFeistは引っ張りだこだな。ちなみに今年の4月23日には長い沈黙を破って彼女の新アルバムが発売される。



Despite their carefree music, they seem to have a very strong opinion on politics and current world affairs as they wrote in their Myspace blog about the situation in the middle east concerning the U.S. As expected, the comments section turned into a heated debate about war and the Bush administration. I'm glad they don't incorporate that stuff into their music. Leave that to other bands please.

気楽な音楽を作りながらも政治・世界情勢に強い関心を持っているようで、
マイスペースのブログにイラク戦争の事を書いていた。もちろんコメント欄では
ブッシュ政権などについての論争が繰り広げられてた。KOCの音楽にはそういった要素が一切なくて良かった。そういうバンドじゃないし。



They seemed to like involving the audience in their performance. For one of their songs they asked the audience to sing a particular note while they sung. For the last song, "I'd Rather Dance With You", they invited people near the stage onto the stage to dance with them (photo above).

観客を参加させようとするパフォーマンスが多かった。バックコーラスを客に歌ってもらったり、最終曲の"I'd Rather Dance With You"ではステージ近くの客をたくさんステージ上に招き一緒に踊る（上記写真）など。


And I would probably
never forget the trip back to Florence...that night

そしてローマからフィレンツェまでの帰路は一生忘れないと思う…
あの夜は。

I have known the existence of Last.fm but have never used it before. It seemed like a nifty program so I registered and downloaded it and started "scrobbling" the music that I listen to. ---Notable tracks---

1. Beirut - This has been said a million times by everyone but Beirut's music is unmistakebly Neutral Milk Hotel-esque. In fact, he recently released an EP titled "Lon Gisland EP" which suspiciously sounds like a nod to NMH's "On Avery Island". The band consists of horns, strings, accordions, glockenspiels and ukuleles. Has a very Eastern Europe vibe to it. Oh yeah, and the frontman of this band that puts everything together is a 20 year old Brooklyner.

2. TV on the Radio - actually saw them as an opening act for the Franz Ferdinand gig, but didn't think they were great back then. Now that I've gotten to like their stuff, I really want to see them live again. The band is a group of African Americans (Politically Correct) from Brooklyn, and they admit that they were the only ones in their neighborhood who were into New Wave music.

4. Fujiya and Miyagi - these guys aren't actually Japanese. And there's three of them, not two as the name suggests. They are three British dudes making electronica music. On this particular track, "Photocopier", they reveal the shocking truth in their lyrics - "yeah we were just pretending to be Japanese". I have yet to figure out why.

1. Beirut - 散々言われてる事だけどこのバンドはNeutral Milk Hotel色が強い。つい最近リリースしたEPのタイトル「Lon Gisland EP」もNMHの「On Avery Island」を意識したと思われるし。まあそれは置いといて、Beirutの曲はストリングス、ブラス、アコーディオン、木琴にウクレレを使った東ヨーロッパ風味な音楽。実はこのバンドをまとめてるフロントマンがブルックリン住まいの20歳だと知った時は驚いた。

2. TV on the Radio - Franz Ferdinand ライブにて演奏してるのを見た時はイマイチだと思ってあまり興味を持たなかったバンド。今はすっかり好きになってしまったので是非ともまたライブで見たい。ブルックリン出身の黒人グループなんだけど、やっぱり「近所でNew Wave音楽を聞いてたのは俺達ぐらいだった」と認めている。　

4. Fujiya and Miyagi - フジヤ&ミヤギ。この方達は日本人ではありません。イギリス人です。あと二人では無く、三人組というなんとも紛らわしいネーミングのバンド。ジャンルはエレクトロニカ。彼らの歌詞の一部に「そう、僕たち日本人のフリしてただけ」というのがある。理由は不明。

 

第二十九弾: Busdriver + Deerhoof ライブ ＠ Irving Plaza

Nuclear-powered insanity, Deerhoof have released their latest album and are on tour.

ハイテンションクレイジーバンドDeerhoofが新アルバム発売そしてツアーを開始（見に行くバンドはほとんどこのパターン）。さっそく狂った宴に行って参りました。



Busdriver バスドライバー (right 右)

Let's start with this man with an afro. He is Regan Farquhar, commonly known as "Busdriver". With his 5th solo out from Kill Rock Stars, he has been appearing as a opening act for Deerhoof, receiving mixed reactions from the mainly indie-rock crowd.

まずはこのアフロから始めよう。「バス運転手」のソロ名で通っている彼の本名はレーガン・ファルクァー。レーベル「ロックスターを殺せ」から通算5枚目のソロアルバムを出し、Deerhoofの前座を務める元気なアフロ。ほぼインディーファンで埋め尽くされた会場にて彼の「パフォーマンス」が炸裂すると観客から様々なリアクションが返ってくる。



Simply put, Busdriver is a free-style-esque rapper that high-speed raps to some unconventional beats produced by some random dude at the back of the stage. His "performance" ranges from wrapping Christmas tree lights around his body amidst a disco light show to your standard audience-response type of rap.

Audience type 1 - standing still, frown on face, "what the hell is this rapper doing here"
Audience type 2 - "BUSDRIVER!!! DUDE, HE'S FREAKIN AWESOME!"

Oh yeah, there was another opening act - Proton Proton.

とどのつまりBusdriverとはステージ後方の男が作り出す奇怪なビートに高速ラップを乗せるエンターテインメント重視のフリースタイルっぽいラッパーの事である。ラップの中に観客のレスポンスを混ぜるという一般的な手法ももちろん使うが、その他にもディスコライトショウ中のステージ上で体にクリスマスイルミネーションを巻きつけながら踊るという隠し芸なんかも披露。

客反応タイプA：棒立ち、眉間にシワ、「なんだコイツ…」
客反応タイプB：「バスドライバーーーー！！最高だよ、最高！！」

そういえばもう一つ、Proton Protonっつーバンドも前座してた。



BTW he was wearing a Run DMC shirt.

ちなみに「Run DMC」シャツを着てた。



One of the main attractions of Deerhoof apart from their musicsianship is the schizophrenic madman drumming by drummer Greg Saunier and the hopping action by singer/bass-player Satomi Matsuzaki. And her existential crooning sounds so surreal especially in a live setting. I have a feeling she might actually be faking some of her heavy Japanese accent though.

曲の話は別としてライブでのこのバンドの見所はなんと言ってもドラマーGreg Saunierの超過激ドラミングとボーカル兼ベースプレーヤー、サトミ・マツザキの飛び跳ねアクション。ライブで聴くと彼女の歌声は一層シュールに聴こえる。でもあの強い日本語訛りはある程度わざとやってるように思える。



These guys actually fronted Radiohead all summer during Radiohead's new album songs tour. Listening to some of the live recordings of those shows, its obvious that Thom Yorke is really into Deerhoof. Deerhoof has actually fronted a lot of famous bands such as: Sonic Youth, Wilco, and the Flaming lips.

実は夏の間ずっとRadioheadの前座を務めてたDeerhoof。そのツアーのライブ音源とか聞いてるとトム・ヨークがかなりのDeerhoof好きなのがわかる。Radioheadの他にもSonic YouthやWilcoやFlaming Lipsなど何気に色んな大物バンドの前座をしてる。



Naturally, Deerhoof played a lot of songs from their new album that they just released. "Kidz Are So Small" was especially memorable, which goes like this:

"If I were a man and you a dog, I throw a stick for youuuuuu"

I couldn't quite hear what Satomi Matsuzaki was singing at the middle part of that song, which sounded like Japanese, so I listened to the track on the CD when I got back home. It turned out she was saying: "Potato-chip Potato-chip patatata-patata-ta". I have no idea how they come up with their lyrics.

I was glad I was able to hear "Wrong Time Capsule". That song rocks.

セットリストはやはり新アルバムからの曲が多かった。その中でも"Kidz Are So Small"が印象的だったんだけど、歌詞が「私が人であなたが犬だったら棒を投げてあげる」というモノで。その曲の中盤あたりで日本語っぽい言葉を発してたけどあまり良く聞き取れなかったので後でCD聞いて確認したら：

「ポテトチップー、ぽてとちっぷー、ぱたたたたった、ぱたたたた！」

って。とても不思議な歌詞ですね。

あと"Wrong Time Capsule"を聞けてよかった。やっぱライブでも盛り上がるね、あの曲は。



The audience was also insanely hyper-energetic. It's almost as if the entire crowd was having a mass-seizure.

そして観客のノリ方も尋常じゃない。まるで会場にいる全ての客がてんかんでも起こしてるような。



This is their new album, Friend Opportunity and a free wrist-band that they were handing out at the live venue. I instantly liked the early single they released, "+81". I gave the wrist-band the next day.

これが新しいアルバムFriend Opportunityとライブで無料配布してたリストバンド。アルバムに先行して発表された"+81"なんかはかなり好き。リストバンドは次の日にあげました。



There were these weird pictures enclosed in the CD. This isn't all of it, but I just layed some of them out on my desk. I like the one where the grey dude is poking the other grey dude's eye: "ouch".

アルバムケースを開けると中から奇妙なアートが次々と出現。全部じゃないけど、ちょっと並べてみた。
