#写字室のなかの旅

老人は幅の狭いベッドの端に座っている。手のひらは膝の上、うなだれていて床をじっと見つめている。彼は気付いていないのだが、天井のちょうど彼の真上の位置にはカメラが取り付けられている。一秒に一回、そのシャッターは静かに切られ、地球が一周するごとに八万六千四百枚の静止画を生み出すこととなる。彼が見られていることに気付いているとしても何ら問題はない。彼の意識は他のところに向いており、空想で頭が一杯である。というのも、彼は彼を悩ます問題の解決法を考えているからだ。

彼は何者だろうか？彼はここで何をしているのだろう？いつここに来て、そしていつまでここにいるのだろうか？運が良ければ、時間が我々にすべて教えてくれるだろう。差し当たりは、写真をできる限り注意深く眺めることにし、結論を早まるのは控えておこう。

部屋の中にはいくつか物体があり、そのすべての表面には白いテープが貼られていて、黒い文字で単語が一つ書いてある。例えば、ベッド横のテーブルには「テーブル」と。ランプには「ランプ」と。厳密に言えば物体でない壁にすら、「壁」というテープが貼られている。老人はちょっとの間、顔を上げ、壁を見て、そこに貼られたテープを見て、穏やかな声で「壁」と口に出してみる。まだこの時点では、テープの文字を読み上げたのか、あるいは単に壁そのものに言及したのかは分からない。文字の読み方を忘れているが、物質そのものを認識はできるということかもしれないし、あるいは逆に、物質を認識する能力を失っていても、文字の読み方は忘れていないという可能性だってある。

彼は青と黄の縞々のコットンパジャマを着ていて、足は黒いレザーのスリッパに納まっている。彼は自分が一体どこにいるのか分からなかった。部屋の中、勿論そうだが、この部屋はどんな建物の中にあるのか？家だろうか？病院だろうか？あるいは牢獄だろうか？どれくらいの間ここにいるのか、どのような状況で彼はここに来ることになったのか、彼は思い出せない。彼はずっとここにいたのかもしれない、ここが生まれてからずっと住んでいる場所なのかもしれない。彼が分かっているのは、自らの心が拭い去れない罪の意識で満ちているということだった。同時に、彼は自分が酷く不当な行為の被害者であるという感覚からも逃れられないのであった。
