Judging from the short speech he has just made, I think he is a very coherent speaker.
(1) careless
(2) clear
(3) dull
(4) passionate

1. (of ideas, thoughts, arguments, etc.) logical and well organized; easy to understand and clear
2 .(of a person) able to talk and express yourself clearly
以上OALD

1. If something is coherent, it is well planned, so that it is clear and sensible and all its parts go well with each other.
2. If someone is coherent, they express their thoughts in a clear and calm way, so that other people can understand what they are saying.

1.[C2] If an argument, set of ideas, or a plan is coherent, it is clear and carefully considered, and each part of it connects or follows in a natural or reasonable way.
2.[C2] If someone is coherent, you can understand what they say
以上Cambridge

1. logical and well-organized: easy to understand
2. able to talk or express yourself in a clear way that can be easily understood
以上MW’s Learner’s

1. if a piece of writing, set of ideas etc is coherent, it is easy to understand because it is clear and reasonable
2. if someone is coherent, they are talking in a way that is clear and easy to understand
以上LDOCE

words, thoughts or ideas that are coherent are arranged in an order that makes them easy to understand
a piece of writing or speech that is coherent is easy to understand because it is clear and well-planned, so that all the parts fit well together
以上Longman Activator Thesaurus

NOWで “=coherent speaker”

“=coherent speech”

  • Judging from the short speech he has just made, I think he is a very coherent speaker.

の “a very coherent speaker” という使い方に「?」

  • Judging from the short speech he has just made, I think he is very coherent.

Judging from [by] A. ≒ To judge from [by] A.

Judging by [from] the look of the sky(↘↗), I'd say it's going to rain.

júdging [OR to júdge] from [OR by] ...
Judging from her clothes, she is not so young.

júdging [to júdge] from [by] …
Judging [To judge] from [by] what you say, you are not happy with your wife.

You use judging by, judging from, or to judge from to introduce the reasons why you believe or think something. 〜
Judging by the opinion polls, he seems to be succeeding.
Judging from the way he laughed as he told it, it was meant to be humorous.

judging by something
Judging by her last email, they are having a wonderful time.
to judge from something
To judge from what he said, he was very disappointed.
(OALD)

judging by/from (ALSO tojudge by/from)
[B2] used to express the reasons why you have a particular opinion:
Judging by what he said, I think it’s very unlikely that he’ll be able to support your application.
(Cambridge)

judging by/from something
used to say that you are making a guess based on what you have just seen, heard, or learned:
Judging by his jovial manner, he must have enjoyed his meal.
Judging from what you say in your letter, you don’t sound well.
(LDOCE)

Judging from this schedule, we have a busy week ahead. [= this schedule indicates that we have a busy week ahead]
Judging by its smell, I’d say the milk is spoiled. = To judge from its smell, I’d say the milk is spoiled.

(a) Judging from the look of the sky, it’s going to rain this afternoon.
(b) Judging by the look of the sky, it’s going to rain this afternoon.

Judging from the sky, it is ( ) to rain soon.
1.alike 2.likely 3.seemed 4.Seeming

Judging from the ( ) she speaks, I'm sure she is a native of Hakata.
1. way 2. how 3. how to 4. what 5. accent

A: If you go out today, don't forget to take an umbrella with you.
B: Why? Judging from the ( ) the sky looks, I don't think it'll rain.
1. way 2. fact 3. atmosphere 4. appearance

ここでも<from + the way SV>の知識が問われています。

(1)Judging by the (2)incoherence of Margret’s speech, her mind (3)must be very (4)confusing.

Among the many problems (1)facing our modern civilization, the fate of the aged is certainly one of (2)those foremost in the public mind, (3)judging by the number of articles on this subject (4)on magazines and newspapers.

(X) on magazines and newspapersの前置詞onをinに訂正すべきもので、judgingに関してはいじらない。

Judging from the way she looked, I should say she was fair rich.

<from + the way SV>が続くことを知っているかどうか、です。

(a)Judging from what she (b)has achieved (c)so far, she is (d)cleverer than wise.

  • the way SVや what SV の名詞節が使われている

  • by the way SV
  • by what SV

It is a curious truth that grasshoppers have their hearing-organs in the sides of the abdomen. Your daughter Vanessa, judging by what she's learnt this term, has no hearing-organs at all.

  • It is a curious truth that grasshoppers have their hearing-organs in the sides of the abdomen. Judging by what your daughter Vanessa has learnt this term, this fact alone is more interesting than anything I have taught in the classroom.

www.telegraph.co.uk

NOW で上位20

ベンチマークとなるCOCAで the way SV。

COCA でwhat SV。
the wayとは異なり、by/from でほぼ同じ。

GLOWBEでthe way SV。

GLOWBEでwhat SV。

TVでthe way SV。

TVで what SV。ここでは、the way とは異なり byとfromで半々くらいの印象。

NOWで the way SV。312:85でby優勢。

NOWでwhat SV。

judging by the way from what/by what はほぼ同じ。from the wayとby howとby the lookでほぼ同じ。

米。by the way独走は同じ。

judging by the wayはここでも独走。by the look粘り強し。

  • judging by the way SV
  • judging by what SV

Judging by the way he spoke, he didn't do well in his exam.
Judging from [by] what she said, everything is going well.

Judging [To judge] from [by] what you say, you are not happy with your wife.

What if there is no real exit from easy money for the rest of our professional lives? Judging by what's happening in Australia, that's no longer a rhetorical question, writes @Moss_Eco
https://twitter.com/opinion/status/1359397495021912065

I have written it just now.
I wrote it just now.
I have just written it.

He has just come home from school
He has come home from school now.
He came home from school just now.

He went out just now.
He has gone out just now.

(○) I have just received your letter.
(×) I have received your letter just now.

a) I have just finished reading the book. (= already)
b) I finished reading the book just now. (= a moment ago)

He ( ) home just now. Didn’t you know that?
① comes ② came ③ has come ④ had come

Have you finished your homework ( )?
① still ② until ③ just now ④ yet

She has worn the same jacket ( ).
① when I met her ② for a month ③ just now ④ one year ago

I have been seen her just now.

そう、“have been seen” の部分ですね。

Last year, a curious nonfiction book (a)has become a Times best-seller; a dense meditation on artificial intelligence (b)by the philosopher Nick Bostrom, (c)who holds an appointment (d)at Oxford.

(a)Although I am not sure about this, (b)I think that, when my brother (c)was in Europe last year, (d)he has been to England.

(X) I have seen a good film yesterday.
(○) I saw a good film yesterday.

(×) Rebecca has returned to her office just now.
(○)Rebecca returned to her office just now.
Rebecca has just returned to her office.

(a) They have just now arrived.
(b) They have arrived just now.
(c ) They arrived just now.
(d) They just now arrived.

(11)
a. “I met him just now,” said Luke. [後位] (Christie, Murder Is Easy)
b. He has just now turned 25.

a. in the end-position, usually with a past tense.
I telephoned Anna just now.
b. in the mid-position with the verb, with a present perfect or past tense.
I(‘ve) just now realized what I need to do.
Practical English Usage, 4th Edition (Oxford、2016

! BE CAREFUL
Don’t use ‘right now’ or ‘just now’ in formal writing.

助動詞として用いられる<used to原形>の否定でよく見られる <did not used to 原形>が、 0.07 です。

な nothing is more important than は、0.05 です。

Malaysia targets a record 5 million Chinese visitors in 2024 as part of its efforts to accelerate post-pandemic recovery

Malaysia welcomes Chinese tourists back in droves after pandemic slump | Tourism | Al Jazeera

https://twitter.com/tmrowing/status/1771004207753200033

Malaysia sees Chinese tourist boom in the offing after pandemic slump 名詞boomとslumpも #比較級含意ファミリー! in the offing は成句で upcoming; just around the cornerと同様に「すぐそこにある;間もなく生じる」。
https://twitter.com/tmrowing/status/1771005997647340028

COCA

Statistics show a record 4.3 million referrals for those of all ages, up 15% since before the pandemic

の典型Statistics show …。 since before …「…
https://twitter.com/tmrowing/status/1503946178580267011

reach a record high 「最高記録に達する」

There was a record (amount of) snow in this area last month. (O-LEX

There was a record number of people in the park.

Crude oil prices hit record highs of more than $70 a barrel. (OALD)

The strike went on for a record 140 days.

The US trade deficit ballooned to a record $167 billion.

① Oil prices ⌈hit [reached] a record high of $75 a barrel.
② Oil prices ⌈hit [reached] a record $75 a barrel.

Tokyo is a showcase of how “heat island” can make its mark on a city. Tokyo had a record 67 days in 2000 that hit 30°C or higher.

Ukraine Says Destroyed Russian Military Boat In Black Sea

www.ndtv.com
It is said that SV S reportedly V と同じ感覚なのかとも思ったのですが、実際には、 S says ready [willing] to 原形 S says seem to 原形 があるので、動詞の時制の原理原則がよくわからない。
https://twitter.com/tmrowing/status/1764948929823879403

https://www.newagebd.net/article/208847/hero-alom-says-unwilling-to-continue-case-against-rizvi

Social media content creator Ashraful Hossen, popularly known as Hero Alom, on Monday filed a case with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court against the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi for making ‘defamatory’ remarks about him.
Alom, however, later told the court that he had forgiven the BNP leader and did not want to continue with the case.
Alom told New Age, ‘I informed the court that I am not willing to continue the case. I asked the court to pardon the BNP leader.’

Macron says would take 'decades' for Ukraine to join EU

www.youtube.com

French lawmakers have adopted amendments that Macron’s government, which has spent years pitching France as business-friendly, says would send the wrong signal to investors

Dominican Republic’s president says will never accept setting up refugee camps, when asked about Haiti situation

Smaller companies in Germany cope well with #energy price fluctuations - survey Increasing share of companies only spend small fraction of sales on energy, and large majority says managed to reduce consumption

Smaller companies in Germany cope well with energy price fluctuations - survey | Clean Energy Wire

What does it mean when it says failed to authenticate your connection?
www.thewindowsclub.com

The mine reportedly had an accident rate triple the national average.

His van allegedly struck the two as they were crossing a street.

  • reportedly
  • allegedly

He says has been in a battle with Landsec, who own the building, since February, demanding clarification on the building's EWS1 certificate and any planned works to satisfy the requirements.
www.walesonline.co.uk

Usage
In recent years it has become common for speakers to include allegedly in statements that are controversial or possibly even defamatory. The implication is that, by saying allegedly, the speaker is distancing himself or herself from the controversy and even protecting himself or herself from possible prosecution. However, the effect created may be deliberate. The use of allegedly can be a signal that, although the statement may seem outrageous, it is in fact true: He was drunk at work. Allegedly. Conversely, it is also possible to use allegedly as an expression of ironic scepticism: He’s a hard worker. Allegedly.

The 28-year-old says had a complete stranger not come to her rescue, she dreads to think what could have happened.

Sam Kerr has pleaded not guilty to allegations of a racially aggravated incident in London.

https://twitter.com/tmrowing/status/1769568863631601959

  • exacerbate
  • intensify
  • heighten

Ngram Viewer

  • racially aggravated

GLOWBE

COCA

続いて、目的語がproblem(s)でCOCA

Part 2

tmrowing.hatenablog.com

U.S. Coronavirus Death Toll Tops Number of Americans Killed in Vietnam Wa

Spain’s COVID-19 death toll has surpassed 20,000 after recording another 565 deaths in 24 hours.

South Africa’s confirmed coronavirus cases have doubled in two weeks to a quarter-million, and India has seen its biggest daily spike as its total passed 800,000

Chile eyes gradual reopening after coronavirus infections slow in some areas

If the process or rate of something accelerates or if something accelerates it, it gets faster and faster.
If something slows or if you slow it, it starts to move or happen more slowly.
If someone slows down or if something slows them down, they become less active.

名詞化構文の the awareness of …

Part 1

71. With the U.S. climbing toward what epidemiologists are calling a third peak of pandemic infections, public health experts fear gatherings of families and friends could make an already bad situation worse.
https://twitter.com/NBCNews/status/1317294522485952512

Firefighters battled to contain wildfires sweeping across southwest Europe, as a heat wave showed no sign of abating, with Britain poised to set new temperature records.

sweeping across … 「… abate= die down「沈静化する」。 poised to 原形「… set a new record「新記録を打ち立てる」。

The humanitarian crisis deepens as Israeli forces escalate their attacks in the besieged enclave.

https://twitter.com/BostonGlobe/status/1259641960446345217

After more than 100 days of confinement due to the #coronavirus pandemic, #Havana residents are starting to enjoy the city again as #Cuba eases lockdown measures
https://twitter.com/tmrowing/status/1279585006772383745

As #COVID19 case numbers continue to rise, many questions about the spread, mutation & treatment of the virus still remain.
https://twitter.com/NewsHour/status/1281011948189073410

From English pubs to the Spanish seaside, local lockdowns are cropping up all over the world as countries ease restrictions only to encounter new coronavirus outbreaks.

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/07/09/health/local-lockdowns-leicester-melbourne-gutersloh-intl/index.html

As snows dwindle and glaciers recede, people in the mountains of northern India are building huge ice cones that provide water into summer

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/article/one-way-to-fight-climate-change-make-your-own-glaciers-perpetual-feature

Over 40 Florida hospitals max out ICU capacity as Covid-19 cases surge across US

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jul/10/florida-coronavirus-cases-icu-beds-arizona-texas

https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/covid-19-test-results-could-take-week-or-more-s-n1233326

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/11/world/asia/china-hong-kong-security-schools.html

Catalonia urges thousands of people to stay home as coronavirus cases rise

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-spain-catalonia-idUSKCN24K0G8/

A Trump administration change in the way hospitals report Covid data is bringing confusion and more work to medical centers as cases explode across the U.S. And hospitals that don’t get it right every day could end up receiving fewer critical drugs

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/07/22/trump-hospital-data-cdc-drugs-379038

As Florida surpasses NY in total COVID-19 cases and more ICUs statewide continue to fill up, concern grows over whether to open schools in the fall. Now some medical professionals are urging officials to shut down “and start over” to stop the spread.
https://twitter.com/CBSEveningNews/status/1286793073654202368

Maharashtra School News: State government reduces Classes 1 to 12 syllabus by 25% for academic year 2020-21.

In view of the pandemic, the Maharashtra government has reduced the syllabus by 25 percent for the academic year 2020-21. in view of ...「…

https://7news.com.au/lifestyle/health-wellbeing/covid-testing-clinics-pop-up-amid-fears-of-inner-sydney-outbreak-c-1200600

Georgetown University is moving classes fully online this fall for undergraduate and graduate students "due to the acceleration of the spread."
https://twitter.com/ABCWorldNews/status/1288541885158633475
https://abcnews.go.com/US/coronavirus-updates-fema-covid-19-death-toll-surging/story?id=72047925&cid=social_twitter_wnt
move A online 副詞のonline。 A of B の名詞構文、the acceleration of the spread。

The comments by the United Nations Human Rights Committee come as the Trump administration faces growing criticism for deploying federal agents to American cities to confront protesters.
https://twitter.com/nytimesworld/status/1288542053798944768
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/29/world/americas/united-nations-portland-protests.html
the comments の定冠詞複数とagents/cities/protestersの無冠詞複数。

Fewer people are willing to resume pre-pandemic activities (seeing friends, sending kids back to school, going to religious services and restaurants) in July than they were in June, a U.S. survey has found.

https://www.nydailynews.com/2020/07/31/people-growing-less-confident-about-returning-to-daily-activities-amid-recent-covid-19-surges-survey-finds/

Economic benefits of vaccination programmes vastly outweigh costs

https://www.newscientist.com/article/2250696-economic-benefits-of-vaccination-programmes-vastly-outweigh-costs/

China could overtake the US as the world’s largest economy by 2024

https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2020/07/largest-global-economies-1992-2008-2024/
take over (≒outstrip )「…

Bourbon is the most recognised variant of American whiskey, outselling Rye and other types of American whiskey by a considerable margin.
https://twitter.com/DailyO_/status/1291956965086822400
https://www.dailyo.in/variety/bourbon-jack-daniels-whiskey-alcohol-33475
A outsell B 「AはBよりも売れている;売り上げが多い」。

Last fully intact ice shelf in Canada collapses into ocean The Milne Ice Shelf lost more than 40% of its area in two days. The initial break took place between July 30 and 31. The area shrank by about 30 square miles, or 43% of its original size.
https://twitter.com/NYDailyNews/status/1292163437074755585
https://www.nydailynews.com/2020/08/08/canadas-last-intact-arctic-shelf-collapses-into-ocean-creating-ice-island-larger-than-manhattan/

The nation’s budget deficit swelled to a record $2.8 trillion in the first 10 months of the fiscal year, with the federal government on track to more than double the largest shortfall on record by the end of 2020.
https://twitter.com/usnews/status/1293660689966542849
on track to A (=原形) 「Aへの軌道に乗っている: (着々と)Aの準備中」の原形doubleを副詞more thanが修飾。

Easing Covid limits early ‘could inflate deaths and deepen recession’

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2020/aug/13/lifting-coronavirus-restrictions-too-early-would-be-a-disaster

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is cutting short lawmakers’ summer recess with a vote expected this Saturday on legislation that would prohibit changes at the U.S. Postal Service as tensions mount.

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/pelosi-calls-house-back-into-session-to-vote-on-postal-bill

https://www.news24.com/News24/watch-covid-19-protective-equipment-adding-to-pollution-crisis-20200816

Over the past 30 years, Greenland’s contribution to global sea levels has grown significantly as ice losses increase A major international report concludes it is losing ice seven times faster than it was during the 1990s
https://twitter.com/BBCWorld/status/1296708663210639362
https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-53849695

https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/513177-as-covid-19-surges-on-campuses-in-person-learning-is-less-of-a-reality/

Firefighters, aided by improving weather conditions, made significant progress this morning containing the three raging wildfires surrounding the Bay Area.
https://twitter.com/sfchronicle/status/1299750739305279488
aided by ...

A and B vie for C (=手に入れたい人・もの) / over D(=争点) 。

Weather forecasts for Labor Day weekend show another heat wave coming to the Bay Area, potentially increasing fire risk and compounding air quality issues.

close to …「… come up with …「…

Australia’s virus hot spot chafes under lockdown as infection rate gradually improves
https://twitter.com/ReutersUS/status/1302162102883319813

https://www.wsj.com/articles/as-coronavirus-rebounds-europe-rejects-new-lockdowns-11600251871
gain momentum「弾みがつく;加速する」。

You can demand a recount.

  • a lot of 複数形名詞を動詞の is が受ける

as節の主語は、the numbers of people でnumbersも複数形、peopleも複数扱いする名詞の筈。

We know that there is a gap between the numbers of women and men regularly participating in sport.

The researchers found no significant difference in the numbers of arm or hip fractures between those who drank one glass of milk a week or less and those who drank two or more.

Where the numbers of women and men present were about the same, men asked almost two-thirds of the questions during the discussion.

ここでは、前者が the numbers of … students の複数形主語を受けて、have grownと複数呼応。
後者が、the numbers of these cells という複数形主語を受けて、staysと単数呼応です。

A number of people who face cyber-bullying ロ. while connecting with friends ハ. has been increasing ニ. year by year.

  • The numbers of people who face cyber-bullying while connecting with friends has been increasing year by year.

Girls [Women] interested in railroads are increasing in number.

Guests are returning in increasing numbers---a sure sign that we are on the right track.

There was a rapid growth in the numbers of private cars.

They are concerned about the reduction in numbers of people eligible for legal aid.

Tory MP Sir Roger Gale tells Sky News the numbers of people at Manston migrant processing centre in Kent is "wholly unacceptable".

One area in which we can see the insecurity is that while the numbers of people unemployed has fallen, the numbers of people on jobSeeker or the youth allowance is now higher than it was before the pandemic

www.place-inc.net

1. Mr. Thatcher said, “Willy Grugschmid has been on the road for three years now trying to find himself. The only time he knows where he is is when he has to call collect and ask his parents for money.” “It takes some people longer to find themselves than other people,” Rolf said defensively.

2. The first time I saw San Francisco Ballet principal Yuan Yuan Tan dance was as a 9-year-old child in the early aughts.
https://pointemagazine.com/a-tribute-to-yuan-yuan-tan/

※the 序数や最上級の限定 time ... was に続く、as a 9-year-old child 「9歳児の時に」は、本来副詞句となるもの。

3. As I recall Cloth Fair was where John Betjeman lived for a time. The only time I saw him in person was as a boy at St Barnabas church Pimlico, where I was in the choir in the late 50s.

Francis Tibbles September 29, 2022 at 9:19 am

4. The only time I saw her being harassed was by a grumpy old man as we were waiting for the elevator in Firestone Library.
https://paw.princeton.edu/inbox/mild-memorable-harassment

I saw her being harassed

5. The only time I saw Ginger Rogers in the flesh was by chance in a book store on New York’s Fifth Avenue. She was doing a book signing (Ginger: My Story – a good read) and was well past her dancing years, but she still had a certain allure.
https://theartsdesk.com/theatre/top-hat-lowry-salford

6. The only time G2G would have been a good deal was if we were getting the oil cheaper. But we didn't, unless we did and someone was pocketing the discounts.
https://twitter.com/Mathenge_UX/status/1748086206087213219

7. We were separated, heading to a divorce. The only time I saw her [was] if we were on the same plane or the same building together.
https://www.wrestlinginc.com/1354976/kevin-sullivan-recalls-chris-benoit-wcw-storyline-preceded-divorce/

8. We want them to genuinely appreciate the thoughtfulness and generosity of others. This is not an easy job, but one of the best ways we can tackle it is by providing our children with a model of behavior that strikes a balance between kindness and frankness, honesty and diplomacy, showing them through our own actions how to negotiate these delicate but important social interactions.

by + ing 「…

9. Another way animals learn is through imitation. Some young birds learn to fly by imitating their parents.

10. One reason for going to the street shops is because of the relationship you have with the owners.

※<the reason is because SV>での、because の節が補語に来る例はもうお馴染だと思いますが、本来副詞節だったbecause SVが補語の位置を占められるなら、副詞句の<because of + 名詞句>が補語の働きをしても、何の不思議もないでしょう。

11. When it comes to marketing surveys, the amount that can be accomplished on the manufacturers’ side is gradually increasing, even for those who lack a considerable degree of expert knowledge or experience. However, the reason that this project was a success is thanks to the cooperation that INTAGE provided in a specialized field that we didn’t understand on our own.
https://www.intage.co.jp/english/case/case_01.html

tmrowing.hatenablog.com

12. And it is Blair who today has managed to convince an evidently impatient American president to take the risky course of seeking yet another security council resolution before acting against Iraq. This is despite the possibility of a messy political failure at the UN.
https://fpc.org.uk/the-healer/
Article by Robert Kagan September 15, 2006

13. While study participants also got some information from traditional media (print and broadcast), they often accessed it on the social media channels of these mainstream media. Despite complaints about their financial challenges, they prioritised their ability to receive communication at all times through their social media accounts. This is even though networks and internet subscription plans are expensive for them.
https://theconversation.com/how-young-nigerians-distrust-of-political-leaders-fuels-covid-misinformation-176054

14. You must start making compulsory repayments against your study or training support loan when your repayment income exceeds the minimum repayment threshold. This is even if you are still studying or undertaking an apprenticeship.
https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals-and-families/study-and-training-support-loans/when-must-you-repay-your-loan

(A). This is true [so] even though [even if] B

15. The issue is that higher interest rates make it more difficult for the company to approve borrowers for loans. This is true even though the company's models go beyond traditional metrics.
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/investing/markets/stocks/SOFI-Q/pressreleases/18769063/2-fintech-stocks-to-buy-now-and-1-to-avoid/

16. However, if a store happens to be selling both a food and a book which makes false claims about that food, and is selling the items separately, then no misbranding occurs. This is so even if the book and the food are both produced by the same company, and even if the maker of the food encourages the seller to carry the book.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regulation_of_food_and_dietary_supplements_by_the_U.S._Food_and_Drug_Administration

Ngram Viewer

このThis despite ...
This is true [so] despite ...."
