If you are a Mac owner, you might recognize Japanese photographer Kent Shiraishi’s striking photo “Blue Pond” as one of your available desktop backgrounds. A resident of the northern island of Hokkaido, Shiraishi enjoys photographing the natural scenery of his home, including the same stunning pond location during all four seasons. Because the pond, located in Biei, has a dramatic ability to change colors daily, it has been a very fruitful subject for Shiraishi. “Blue Pond” also won Honorable Mention in National Geographic Photo Contest 2011, and his photo of the same location when the water was a beautiful shade of green was an editor’s choice in this year’s contest. “Biei, Hokkaido: Layers of beauty in the Patchwork hills.”
The town of Biei lies in the heart of Hokkaido, cradled by the magnificent peaks of Mount Tokachi. Surrounded by a colorful patchwork of fields and woodlands, it boasts an idyllic scenery that draws visitors from near and far.
The patchwork effect is created by the colors of the various crops — potato, wheat, soybeans and the other plants grown here each season. Over the years, many people have come to Biei to photograph this enchanting landscape.

Private land and field, Don’t enter!

We photographers protect the manners of “do not step in the field”. If you find anyone who has entered the field in reverse, please remind him gently with a resolute attitude. We want to protect our precious agricultural land and tourism resources.

Magical pond that changes color with the weather

Kent Shiraishi took these photos of the Blue Pond, a beautiful body of water in Hokkaido, Japan. Blue Pond receives so much attention because of its shimmering blue hue, which changes into a lovely green in certain light. This pond owes its colors to aluminium hydroxide, a mineral which reflects blue light.

Thank you for publishing my many pictures!

This pond is a very famous “blue pond”, but it is already covered with snow. When I take pictures of “Moon”, I will take the same way as the sun and moon.

Spotlight: Kent Shiraishi, Japan

In our Spotlight feature, we ask our members some questions to learn more about what inspires their photography, the processes they use to make images, and the stories behind their favorite pictures.

Q: What’s the story behind this photo?

A: I won the prize of Honorable Mention in the 2011 National Geographic Photo Contest. The work is “Blue Pond and First Snow, Hokkaido.” The blue pond freezes in winter. That winter, for tourists, we began lighting the pond. As a result, many of the tourists now like to enjoy the winter nights. Especially [during] snowstorms, you will watch a great night of snow.

Q: Why do you take pictures?

A: I take photos because it is my self-expression.

Q: What do you like to take pictures of and why?

A: I like to take pictures of the landscapes of Hokkaido. My favorite place is Hokkaido, because it has the most beautiful nature in Japan. I live there now and love it. I want to be able to show photos of Hokkaido all over the world.

Q: How would you describe your photographic style?

A: My photographic style is to reproduce as much as possible the landscape that I have seen with my eye. I call this photographic style “retina photography.”

Q: Are you a self-taught photographer? If not, how did you learn to shoot?

A: While I was studying photography at a university, I began feeling bored in the middle, and I dropped out. Then I studied photography at the vocational school, and even now, I am continuing to learn by myself.

Q: Are you currently working on any long-term photography projects?

A: Yes, I am. As Hokkaido’s “samurai photographer,” I would like to make Hokkaido into a more famous tourist resort in the world. For that purpose, I continue to take pictures of Hokkaido.

This interview has been edited for clarity.
