You think man can destroy the planet? What intoxicating vanity. Let me tell you about our planet. Earth is four-and-a-half-billion-years-old. There’s been life on it for nearly that long, 3.8 billion years. Bacteria first; later the first multi-cellular life, then the first complex creatures in the sea, on the land. Then finally the great sweeping ages of animals, the amphibians, the dinosaurs, at last the mammals, each one enduring millions on millions of years, great dynasties of creatures rising, flourishing, dying away — all this against a background of continuous and violent upheaval.
Mountain ranges thrust up, eroded away, cometary impacts, volcano eruptions, oceans rising and falling, whole continents moving, an endless, constant, violent change, colliding, buckling to make mountains over millions of years. Earth has survived everything in its time. It will certainly survive us. If all the nuclear weapons in the world went off at once and all the plants, all the animals died and the earth was sizzling hot for a hundred thousand years, life would survive, somewhere: under the soil, frozen in arctic ice. Sooner or later, when the planet was no longer inhospitable, life would spread again.
The evolutionary process would begin again. Might take a few billion years for life to regain its present variety. Of course, it would be very different from what it is now, but the earth would survive our folly, only we would not. If the ozone layer gets thinner, ultraviolet radiation sears earth, so what? Ultraviolet radiation is good for life. It’s powerful energy. It promotes mutation, change. Many forms of life will thrive with more UV radiation. Many others will die out. You think this is the first time that’s happened? Think about oxygen. Necessary for life now, but oxygen is actually a metabolic poison, a corrosive glass, like fluorine.
When oxygen was first produced as a waste product by certain plant cells some three billion years ago, it created a crisis for all other life on earth. Those plants were polluting the environment, exhaling a lethal gas. Earth eventually had an atmosphere incompatible with life. Nevertheless, life on earth took care of itself. In the thinking of the human being a hundred years is a long time. Hundred years ago we didn’t have cars, airplanes, computers or vaccines. It was a whole different world, but to the earth, a hundred years is nothing. A million years is nothing. This planet lives and breathes on a much vaster scale. We can’t imagine its slow and powerful rhythms, and we haven’t got the humility to try.
We’ve been residents here for the blink of an eye. If we’re gone tomorrow, the earth will not miss us.

iPadを使い始めて約2週間。もう少し待ってから買おうと思っていたのですが、I-MIZARレザーケースのモニターとなったので、早めに買う事に。
I-MIZARのケースに入ったiPadとAmazonのKindleケースに入ったKindle(2nd Generation)。iPadのアプリケーションはKindle for iPad。見た目は良く似ていますが、実際に使ってみるとiPadの電子本の弱点がいくつか。
１．反射。Kindleの画面は周り景色を反射しない。だから読みやすい。iPadでは結構反射が気になり、読んでいる画面への集中がしにくくなります。そのため、環境が良くないと、なかなか本を読む事が持続できない。
２．Kindleの場合は”Next Page”のボタンを押さない限り、次のページをめくる事は無い。iPadの画面を下手に触ると、前のページや次のページに行ったり、ノートをつける機能など、”読む事”に関係ない動作を勝手にしてしまう。
３．Kindleが物理的に持っているボタン。Windowsのマウスを使うのと比べるとしょぼい。でもiPadが提供するタッチスクリーンが提供するボタンはもっと使いにくい。
４．iPadは重たい。I-MIZARのように立ててくれるケースに入っていないと読む事は難しい。
５・iPadは本を読むには大きすぎる。重たさもあるのだが、通常の単行本を広げたぐらいの大きさのKindleに比べると、iPadはそれより大きい。新聞を折ったぐらいの大きさ。重さを入れると、重たい雑誌を読んでいる感じ。テーブルに置いて読むのなら良いのだが、反射などで向かい側に窓などがあると、読みにくい。
普通の本に近い感じで本を読む。Kindleはその環境を提供している。
確かに、Wall Street Journalや子供の絵本のようなカラー写真や挿絵がある場合はiPadの方がはるかに優れている。でも反射は気になる。音楽やマルチメディアを必要とするユーザー向けですね。私は営業職なので、ソフトの画面や構成図をお客様に見せる為にiPadを買いましたので、本はKindle.画像はiPadに使い分ける事に。二つを持ち歩く・・・
さて、ケース。
iPadのケースで気になっていたのが、１）落下しない と ２）大きくならない。
Kindleの場合、写真で見るようにフックがあり、絶対ケースからKindleが離れない工夫がKindle自体に組み込まれている。

iPadの場合、すべすべ。完全に覆い尽くせば良いかもしれませんが、そうすると、インタフェース、イヤホン、電源スイッチ、音量コントローラーなどへのアクセス用に穴をあけたり、ケースをiPadより大きさを一回り大きくしなければなりません。
I-MIZARのケースはこの問題を素晴らし技術を使って落下しにくい、インタフェースなどへのアクセスを損なわないように行っています。
iPadの大きさとほぼ同じ大きさのフレームをケースに使う事により、落下しない。iPadよりほとんど大きくならない。 問題点の2点を克服しています。
この2週間、通勤でKindleと一緒に持ち歩いていますが、中からiPadが落ちると思った事はありません。
難点としては、市販されている、シリコンカバーが使えない事。シリコンカバーはiPadを落としたときに衝撃を弱くするメリットがある。このケースを落としたときにどこまで守られるのかは判らない。
営業のツールとして使うわけですので、ルックスは重要。
プロフェッショナルに見える。オレンジ色が映える。青いレザーも濃い青で良い。
銀色の丸いロゴをレザーに変えてもらえればベストかな？
このケースが入ってきた”包装”も最高！ 高級感がある包装は会社に届いた時に周りからも良い反応が。中国製ですが、日本の品質が包装から製品まで伝わっていると。
ちなみに、支えになる”足”にはマグネットが入っていて、きちんとしまう事できます。 しまう時に”パチン”と音がします。
難点としては、ケースに入った形での持ちながらiPadが使えるようにどこか手で握れる所があればベストですが、これが無い。机の上に置いて使うには良いのですが、手持ちしたい時の工夫ができれば・・・
数週間使って、またモニターの報告を行いたいと思います。
