Van Manen was an internationally renowned photographer who left a lasting impression on the world of photography and the people around her. Bertien van Manen began her career as a fashion photographer in the 1970s. However, her work soon evolved into documentary photography, focusing on capturing the daily lives and intimate moments of people worldwide. CHARLESTON, SC.- The Gibbes Museum of Art announced its exhibition featuring the vibrant narrative paintings of Reynier Llanes, an established Cuban artist who spent six years working in Charleston before settling in Miami in 2015. NEW YORK, NY.- David Huffman’s (b. 1963, Berkeley, CA) inaugural exhibition with Casey Kaplan, Children of the Sun, presents a new group of paintings known as “social abstractions” that combine socio-political themes, personal history, and abstract mark-making. Large-scale, densely layered paintings become sites for the artist’s play— swathes of African textiles, spray-painted basketball nets, loose brushstrokes, and collaged imagery merge as a way of storytelling. Huffman activates these planes with memories of his family’s experience in Berkeley, California at the height of the radical Black Power movement in the 1960s and 1970s, combining material evocative of the quest for self and Black liberation. WEST POINT, NY.- The 4,300-seat performance space about an hour north of Carnegie Hall was eerily empty, except for nine judges in uniform sitting behind a thick black curtain. Ada Brooks, her mouth dry from nerves, lifted the bell of her euphonium, a smaller relative of the tuba, and prepared to play the notes that could determine her future. “Breathe,” she thought. “The beginnings are the most treacherous part.” Brooks had told herself this before. In the fifth edition of Post/No/Bills Hezin O fills the niches around the historic staircase with seven colorful wall prints. She challenges conventional notions of graphic design by completely deconstructing her previous works visually and audibly through cutting, repeating, and enlarging. Hezin O aims to symbolically rearrange the existing hierarchy of graphic design. She develops her own grids, deviating from standard grids in design programs such as InDesign, thereby challenging the norm. KYIV.- The lines for the show snake down the block, with people waiting for up to seven hours to buy tickets at the theater in downtown Kyiv. Videos of the performance have drawn millions of views online. The smash hit isn’t a popular Broadway musical or a series of concerts by a pop star — it’s a play based on a classic 19th-century Ukrainian novel, “The Witch of Konotop,” and the mood is anything but upbeat.
