Ransomware group claims responsibility for Christie's hack

People at Christie’s for a preview of auction items, which could only be viewed in physical catalog printouts when the company’s website was brought down by a cyberattack, in New York, May 11, 2024. (Li Qiang/The New York Times)

NEW YORK, NY.- A hacker group called RansomHub said it was behind the cyberattack that hit the Christie’s website just days before its marquee spring sales began, forcing the auction house to resort to alternatives to online bidding. In a post on the dark web on Monday, the group claimed that it had gained access to sensitive information about the world’s wealthiest art collectors, posting only a few examples of names and birthdays. It was not immediately possible to verify RansomHub’s claims, but several cybersecurity experts said it was a known ransomware ... More

Kelly Beeman's first solo exhibition in France on view at Perrotin Paris
PARIS.- Perrotin Paris is pleased to present Distant Cities, Kelly Beeman’s first solo exhibition in France, and her third with the gallery (Seoul, 2022; New York, 2023). The exhibition features three new oil paintings and twenty works on paper, including monochromatic ink paintings—a medium she has recently begun exploring. In Kelly Beeman’s work, life flows serenely. Young girls bask in the tranquility of North American parks and gardens. Nature is idyllic, and nothing seems to disturb the peace of the languid protagonists. Singing, playing the piano, lying on beds or lush patches of grass, striking a pose on a shopping street, or holding a bouquet of white flowers, these girls inhabit a world of serenity, luxury, and pleasure. Yet we know that the “real” world is very different, marred by aggression, violence, tension, and war, leaving little room ... More

Annet Gelink Gallery announces the death of Bertien van Manen
AMSTERDAM.- With deep sorrow, Annet Gelink Gallery announced the passing of artist Bertien van Manen (The Hague, 1935). Van Manen was an internationally renowned photographer who left a lasting impression on the world of photography and the people around her. Bertien van Manen began her career as a fashion photographer in the 1970s. However, her work soon evolved into documentary photography, focusing on capturing the daily lives and intimate moments of people worldwide. The raw and direct nature of documentary photography suited her better than the beautification of fashion shots. Additionally, photography offered Van Manen the opportunity to break free from the rigid confines of the housewife role that prevailed at the time and to ride the wave of the second feminist movement. In the years that followed, Van Manen ... More

Almine Rech opens "Thu-Van Tran: In spring, ghosts return"
NEW YORK, NY.- Almine Rech New York, Tribeca is presenting In spring, ghosts return, Thu-Van Tran's third solo exhibition with the gallery, on view from May 7 to June 15, 2024. Forming the focal point of her exhibition In spring, ghosts return, Thu-Van Tran’s Colors of firey evokes a world of intense paradox. Vivid hues enact their own negation, their multiplicity eclipsed through their mixing by the emergence of a gray singularity. Differentiation morphs into that which is almost indistinguishable. Begun in 2012 as a poetic reckoning with the so-called Rainbow Herbicides that the United States weaponized against Vietnam during Operation Ranch Hand, the series has taken many forms, from wall-sized frescos to monumental paintings. In her most recent expression, the artist explores expanded vistas on a more intimate scale. These works engage the legacies ... More

NILS STÆRK opens Matthew Ronay's solo exhibition: Fruitbody
COPENHAGEN.- NILS STÆRK is presenting Matthew Ronay's solo exhibition: Fruitbody, opening May 24, 4:30–7 pm. In the hidden depths of nature's tapestry, the 'fruitbody' emerges as a symbol of life's cyclical dance, representing the ever-repeating progression of creation and renewal. Defined as the reproductive structure of fungi, it rises above the surface of its material to seed the environment. Fruitbody, Matthew Ronay's sixth solo exhibition at NILS STÆRK, unveils new wall-based and freestanding dyed basswood sculptures that invite viewers into a realm where tangible forms intertwine with metaphysical energies. The works on view present unexpected, perplexing objects, revealing intriguing configurations, further enhanced by an appealingly unrelated yet harmonious color spectrum, meticulously developed with Ronay’s longtime ... David Richard Gallery debuts new paintings by Nathan Ethier
NEW YORK, NY.- David Richard Gallery is pleased to debut new paintings by Nathan Ethier in his second solo exhibition with the gallery, “Heavy Light”. The eighteen new paintings created from 2022 to 2024 range in size from 63 x 60, to 51.5 x 48, 42 x 40, 34.5 x 32.5 to and 16.5 x 15.75. This presentation will showcase twelve of the new works. Layering of saturated and desaturated colors using meticulously applied translucent glazes with overlapping and opposing horizontal and vertical brush strokes that emulate the warp and weft of woven textiles in an overall canvas-filling pattern has been a mainstay of Ethier’s studio practice for years. While the process and use of all over patterns remains constant, the key feature in this newest body of work is the presence of a centrally located focal point comprised of bright and vividly colored rectilinear ... Casey Kaplan presents a new group of paintings by David Huffman
NEW YORK, NY.- David Huffman’s (b. 1963, Berkeley, CA) inaugural exhibition with Casey Kaplan, Children of the Sun, presents a new group of paintings known as “social abstractions” that combine socio-political themes, personal history, and abstract mark-making. Large-scale, densely layered paintings become sites for the artist’s play— swathes of African textiles, spray-painted basketball nets, loose brushstrokes, and collaged imagery merge as a way of storytelling. Huffman activates these planes with memories of his family’s experience in Berkeley, California at the height of the radical Black Power movement in the 1960s and 1970s, combining material evocative of the quest for self and Black liberation. Huffman found himself at the epicenter of revolution at a young age in the charged Berkeley environment. Swelled ... More

She landed one of music's great gigs, but first came boot camp
WEST POINT, NY.- The 4,300-seat performance space about an hour north of Carnegie Hall was eerily empty, except for nine judges in uniform sitting behind a thick black curtain. Ada Brooks, her mouth dry from nerves, lifted the bell of her euphonium, a smaller relative of the tuba, and prepared to play the notes that could determine her future. “Breathe,” she thought. “The beginnings are the most treacherous part.” Brooks had told herself this before. Her fervent pursuit to professionally play the euphonium, which is not used in traditional symphony orchestras, had come with many stressful auditions. This one was her 10th for the institution that calls itself the nation’s largest employer of musicians: the United States military. Time and time again she had practiced and prepared and tried to remember to breathe. She was turned ... More

The Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago opens "Captured Earth"
CHICAGO, IL.- The Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago presents "Captured Earth" on view from May 24-Aug. 18, 2024. The exhibition is curated by Kristin Taylor, MoCP curator of academic programs and collections. "Captured Earth" presents works by artists who create works in photography and installation that use elements from nature to explore place, ecology and the material and mystical qualities of the land. Depictions range from site-specific performances, including Tarrah Krajnak’s documentations of her nature-centered rituals using rocks and plant material, and Alan Cohen’s walking meditations in various landscapes. Some artists use natural elements to create experimental process-based works, such as Jeremy Bolen’s prints produced from film developed in a polluted river or Barbara Crane’s photographs ... More

Grids and glitches beyond boundaries by graphic designer Hezin O on view at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam
AMSTERDAM.- Graphic designer Hezin O throws all design rules overboard with the presentation BHLNTTTX. In the fifth edition of Post/No/Bills Hezin O fills the niches around the historic staircase with seven colorful wall prints. She challenges conventional notions of graphic design by completely deconstructing her previous works visually and audibly through cutting, repeating, and enlarging. Hezin O aims to symbolically rearrange the existing hierarchy of graphic design. She develops her own grids, deviating from standard grids in design programs such as InDesign, thereby challenging the norm. She also deliberately pushes the boundaries of software by playing with glitches. These are unintended and often surprising errors that sometimes occur when editing images and sounds. Additionally, in the current era of razor-sharp images, ... More

Onstage, witches and Cossacks strike a chord with Ukrainians
KYIV.- The lines for the show snake down the block, with people waiting for up to seven hours to buy tickets at the theater in downtown Kyiv. Videos of the performance have drawn millions of views online. The smash hit isn’t a popular Broadway musical or a series of concerts by a pop star — it’s a play based on a classic 19th-century Ukrainian novel, “The Witch of Konotop,” and the mood is anything but upbeat. Consider the opening line: “It is sad and gloomy.” Mykhailo Matiukhin, an actor in the production, said that is what has struck a chord with Ukrainians because it shows “what we are living through now.” “Tragedy comes and takes everything from you, your love and your home,” he said. The play dramatizes the story of a Cossack leader in a Ukrainian community almost 400 years ago as he tries to root out witches that local townspeople ... More
