MapClick or tap the square layers icon in the top left of the map to see available info. Click in the map to collapse the panel again. |
StylePlease choose a map style that you like from the top 3 options on the left. These can be changed at any time while you're viewing by clicking another circle. If a map style is greyed out, you've already zoomed in further than its maximum extent. All maps are provided by tile servers with their own usage policies, at busy times they may fail to provide tiles and that map will become blank grey. |
LayersSelect one or more layers from the row of tick boxes in the lower sections after the horizontal line below the map styles. Multiple boxes can be ticked; selecting too many layers will slow down your display. |
MarkersPlease click the markers on the map for more info. Some places appear in more than one set, and some markers are close together. Hovering over a marker should bring it to the front so you can click it. |
ZoomYou can zoom in and out of the map with the + and - on the right, or with a mouse scroll wheel if you have one, and click/touch and drag the map around after you've zoomed in. There's also a "full screen" option if your browser can handle it. Some maps will zoom in further than others; when you've zoomed past a map's extent it will grey out in the menu. |
CirclesSome layers contains multiples markers which have been clustered together. These are represented by a circle with a number in it.
Hovering will show a blue polygon defining the area covered by the circle. Click it to zoom in to that area. Zooming in should split the circle into smaller ones, and then into individual icons. |
MediaVideos are available by ticking the box next to the category in the menu. Circles will appear which are clusters of videos, click a number and the videos should appear individually. Clicking a clapper-board icon will open a modal pop-up window containing the media. |
GPSLatitude and longitude of places have been supplied in case you'd like to add them to your SatNav. Many of these are approximate, but should bring you to the correct area. |
SoundHovering over a map icon will show a tool-tip which will disappear when you move off the icon. If the tool-tip has a < symbol then the full info contains a pronunciation. When you click the icon, if there's a white ▶ button in the pop-up marker, it'll play the sound of a pronunciation when clicked / tapped. |
UnitsValues shown alone - e.g. 426m - are elevation above sea level. Water depth etc. may also be specified in descriptions. Height (H), width (W), depth (D), area (A), volume (V) etc. are all displayed in metres (or m2 or m3) and litres (GL = GigaLitres). |
TunnelsRoad tunnels are shown as an icon and also as a red line approximating the underground route. Planned works not yet completed are depicted by a dotted line. More info is available within the tunnel marker pop-up. |
HotpotsNatural geothermal pools varying in size from bathing spots for one person to others for a small group. Not all hotpots are suitable for bathing, always check temperature before entering the water. Those shown with a red border have been developed into spas and are therefore paid entry. |
MountainsIt is outwith the scope of this map to provide all of the mountain names and locations. Those which are provided have an icon which references the size, i.e. the tall icon is one of the taller mountains. |
VolcanoesThe colour of the icon represents the activity level of the volcano over the last 8000 years. |
GeothermyGeothermal areas are classed here as somewhere between hot bathing pools and actual volcanoes, usually containing high activity hydrothermal features such as geysers, steam or gas vents, fumaroles, boiling mud pots and bubble or spouting springs.
