ALASKA KNLS tx off air. KNLS Anchor Point has one of its transmitters
off air. This affects the A24 schedule for KNLS TX1, such as Chinese at
0800-1000 UT on 11875 kHz, and English 1000-1100 UT on 9580 kHz etc.
KNLS TX2 running to schedule, with English on 9695 kHz from 0800 UT to
Pacific Rim, heard at very good level tonight.
Bryan Basham at World Christian Broadcasting said they hope to have the
TX1 back on air in early May after a replacement part comes in.

TWR Benin on 1566 kHz 2200-2218 UTC
A damned public lighting beacon a few meters from my house jammed me for
more than two years on the entire medium wave band, forcing me to listen,
late at dawn or just before sunset. For a few days, although the light-
house continues to illuminate the road, the heavy interference has
(mysteriously) disappeared.
In the next few days I plan to try some transoceanic listening when it's
still dark outside.
Meanwhile, this evening I report, TWR from Parakou, Benin (Africa) between
2200 and 2218 UTC, when it goes to QRT, on 1566 kHz. For such a long time,
due to the aforementioned problems, I didn't listen to it in its final
minutes. Broadcast with religious content in an African language, perhaps
Bambara, preceded and followed by announcements in French.
ID at 2215 UT in both French and English and S/OFF at approximately 2218
UT. Good signal, free from interference, with on average deep but not too
frequent fading.

TWR Benin su 1566 kHz 2200-2218 UTC
Un maledetto faro dell'illuminazione pubblica a pochi metri dalla mia abi-
tazione mi ha fatto da jamming per piu di due anni sull'intera banda delle
onde medie, costringendomi ad ascoltare, ad alba inoltrata o poco prima
del tramonto. Da qualche giorno, nonostante il faro continui ad illuminare
la strada, la pesante interferenza e (misteriosamente) scomparsa.
Mi ripropongo nei prossimi giorni di tentare qualche ascolto transoceanico
quando fuori e ancora buio.
Intanto segnalo questa sera, TWR da Parakou, Benin (Africa) tra le 2200 e
le 2218 UTC, quando va in QRT, su 1566 kHz. Tantissimo tempo, che per i
succitati problemi, non la ascoltavo nei suoi minuti finali. Trasmissione
dai contenuti religiosi in lingua africana, forse Bambara, preceduta e
seguita da annunci in Francese. ID alle 2215UT sia in Francese che Inglese
e S/OFF alle 2218 UT circa. Segnale buono, scevro da interferenze, con
fading mediamente profondo ma non troppo frequente.

CHINA China Xizang Broadcasting: No more "Holy Tibet", or even "Tibet"...
Observed 1600-1700 UT external service in English from Tibet and noticed
they no longer ID on air as "Holy Tibet" or "China Tibet Broadcasting" but
as "China Xizang Broadcasting". In fact, throughout the broadcast I didn't
hear the word 'Tibet' once, only 'Xizang'.
This was monitoried on 4905, 4920, 6200, 7255 kHz, the latter two with
good reception via a webSDR in Hong Kong.

CZECH REPUBLIC Czech MW masts demolished.
The Ostrava-Svinov MW transmitter mast was demolished on 28 February 2024.
It used to broadcast CRo Dvojka on 639 kHz / 30kW, CRo Plus on 1071 kHz
5 kW and Radio Dechovka on 1233 kHz / 2 kW - all 3 from the same mast.
Radio Dechovka stopped broadcasting on 28 Feb 2021. I don't know about
any pictures or video from the demolition, but there is a short Czech
report:

The Praha-Zbraslav transmitter masts were demolished on 6 March 2024.
I don't know what happened to the Tesla transmitters, but maybe someone

at 0737 UT, just data signal at -73 dbm strength.

FRANCE TDF DRM digital mode tests.
Ian Brooks reports at 1415 UT on 11 March: hearing a TDF DRM TEST trans-
mission in French on 9575 kHz. It's the first time I've heard any DRM from
them since they ceased transmissions on 3965 kHz in 75-metre band.
S/N 20dB at best, but only about 60% decoding due to changes in signal

Hearing most of the DRM broadcast from M4J Media (MBR Nauen, Germany with
presumed 125 kW) with techno music. A second channel is listed (Journaline
and Slideshow, but how does one see this using kiwiSDR? ... it was easy
using the DReaM software. All this at 20:40 UT on March 12.

DRM on 9810 kHz.
Since 1945 UT I have been receiving a DRM signal on 9810 kHz. Although S/N
ratio was initially good, around 18dB, there was no station ID shown on
the Dram decoder software, but 2 data channels were shown, both of type MM
with a bitrate of 8.64kb/s. As this is a frequency used at other times of
the day by Radio Romania, I suspect that it is them. Is MM a multimedia
mode? I've tried a web search but can't find anything definitely called
MM. The signal is still present at 2035 UT, but is now much weaker.

GUAM KTWR DRM A24 - Updated - Both India blocks are on 15390 kHz.
We have good news for you. KTWR is maintaining the current amount of time
for DRM broadcasts for the A24 broadcast season. The only timing change is
that the two Sunday blocks will have no gap between them. The South Indian
language broadcasts will start 15 minutes earlier than they do in the B23
season. The end time will also be earlier.
We are grateful for your reception reports. The posts on WhatsApp have
been quite helpful. It will be interesting to see how 19 meters performs
in India. We have seen some intermittent multipath issues with 22 meters
in parts of India.

IRAN VIRI tx behaviour; Hebrew px now 'Voice of Iran'; expanded Hausa px.
Using Qatar webSDR, VIRI Arabic Service was observed in progress on 15240
& 15430 kHz at 1010 UT on 4 April 2024, // MW 1224 kHz. At 1020 UT 15430
kHz abruptly switched to the VIRI Cheshmazar IS followed by their Hausa
broadcast, which was on till 1150 UT, so not 1050-1120 UT as some sources
have it. VIRI Hebrew Service signed-on 15430 kHz at 1150 UT, noted no
longer identifying as "Kol David" [Voice of David] but simply "Kol Iran"
[Voice of Iran], although their website hasn't caught up yet.
Throughout the 1010-1220 UT period VIRI was also observed with their Dari
programme on 11730kHz, thus making a total of three SW transmitters on air
together, which seems to be VIRI's maximum nowadays.

I realised something about this that might actually be obvious.
Nonetheless, it's a few additional facts to add to the mix.
According to the "Worldwide Marine Radiofacsimile Broadcast Schedules",
HLL2 is on the following frequencies with WEFAX maps:
3585 kHz 1200-0000 UTC
5857.5 kHz ALL BROADCAST TIMES
7433.5 kHz ALL BROADCAST TIMES
9165 kHz ALL BROADCAST TIMES
13570 kHz 0000-1200 UTC J3C 3 kW
In general, one usually tunes to the nominal frequency minus 1.9 kHz in USB mode:
3583.1 / 5855.6 / 7431.6 / 9163.1 / 13568.1 kHz
for example if one uses FLDigi. Therefore 5855.6kHz is not a new frequency
as such, but rather the minus 1.9 kHz 'version' of 5857.5 kHz.
According to the WEFAX schedule no charts are transmitted at around 1300UT
This makes me wonder if the voice forecasts are a new addition to the
schedule.
It may be worth checking 3583.1 / 7431.6 / 9163.1 kHz USB mode at around
1300 UT to see if voice forecasts are there as well.
BTW - I have logged maps on both 7431.6 and 9163.1 kHz, as late as October
2023.

MYANMAR Thazin Radio has been silent on shortwave since April 7, 2024.
It seems shortwave transmitter Pyin Oo Lwin is having a bit of trouble.
However, I caught them tuning in on 639 kHz just now, at 13:00 UTC, ming-
ling with a Thai station. Thazin Radio is part of the Myawaddy Communi-
cation Center and is owned by the military in Myanmar. It's financed by
Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited (MEHL), which is a conglomerate owned by
the military.

By 1642 UT, Arabic talk. LSB tuning of 11935 kHz helps very little.
Republic of Yemen Radio relay is still going, tho some have questioned
whether any SA SW transmitters be on the air. 11940 kHz off at 1657* UT
and 11935 kHz is still on but no modulation; 1658 UT bits of mod cutting
on and off, 1659 UT Arabic stays on, and level improves, but no ToH ID
heard.
1700 UT now there is ChiCom splattering from 11925 kHz starting with
timesignal. Aoki database list says CNR1 via Lingshi already on since
1200 UT. 1730 UT mostly in clear with declamatory speech by one voice,
occasional interruptions by a calmer voice.

But first the news, leading with Spain recognizing Palestine in the UN as
an independent country? 2208 UT A24 sked in future tense but this is the
future, again nothing specific about English. 2209 UT feature interview
with a founder of that museum. I listen to the whole thing but they never
mention *where* in Canada it be! FYI, Canada is almost 20X the area of
Spain. They did mention a website, once toward the end so I could not copy
it. So I go to google.

As you do,when you are tuning the bands and wondering if there is anything
new, you occasionally come across an unexpected signal. This happened to
your OTD Editor last month and DAVE PORTER G4OYX,
(Retired) Senior Transmitter Engineer Woofferton 1982 - 2012
sent this informative acknowledgement:
"Thank you for your report and I confirm the details for 9480 kHz are cor-
rect. These transmissions were to fault-find on a 250 / 300 kW sender at
the UK HF transmitter station at Woofferton in England.
The duration of these tests can be variable as the engineers can sometimes
need a long time to establish a fault or they may interrupt the test, make
an adjustment and resume. This is particularly so if the fault is of an
intermittent nature.
Encompass Digital Media, Woofferton is the only remaining UK HF sender
broadcast station and also is the only one with this transmission test
audio and email address.
The audio is contained in a file play-out system and incorporates non-
copyright music and voice announcements from one of the engineers,
Martin, 2E1EKX at the transmitter site.
There is a Club amateur radio station on site with the callsign M0WOF and
the operators are Matt G8XYJ, Dave M0MYA, Gillian M0OVW, John G1JOD and
Martin 2E1EKX.

Apparently, the BBCWS has dropped its one page world regional program
schedules that one can download as pdf files. In its place in its "How to
Listen" section is a one page listing of FM frequencies around the world.
The shortwave charts still remain.
I always found the one page regional schedules quite helpful even for
listening to the various WS streams on the Internet. I would write the BBC
about this, but I've learned going back to the days at the turn of the
century when BBCWS dropped shortwave to North America that, despite what
the BBC says, it really isn't interested in hearing from its loyal
listeners when it comes to matters of policy. Management makes these deci-
sions in a vacuum, almost never seeking outside input even within the BBC
rank and file itself. So, why bother? Even in its "Over to You" program,
they're more interested in telling you why their decisions are proper
rather than admit they made an error in judgement.

April 9: 9475 kHz back on air now: yesterday's interruptions were due to
driver overload, arcing and water leakage. Nominal sked is still 20-22 UT
PPP & 22-24 UT others on 9475 kHz; 0000-0430 UT A.W.R. on 5085 kHz.
Coincidentally I had been looking at the {US-}FCC (not HFCC) website which
has finally been updated with A24 info as well as B23. As I told George,
it does not show the two frequencies active, rather other old ones not in
use: 5830, 9930, 12105 kHz. He also plans to get 15 MHz on the air;
I don't recall that frequency. 9475 kHz will be starting earlier with
additional programming.

piciously as if employed for jamming, but no bother on center frequency at
UTwente where measured. And radar gone by 1741 UT recheck. Strangely
enough, neither 17690 nor 17680 kHz in latest HFCC April 3, the only GB
entries on 16mband being VOA on 17530, 17850 kHz.
Lower RMs for Cuba do appear. Nor does 17865 kHz, if that still apply for
R. Martisky on weekends 13-17 UT; no conflicts there. 17680 kHz is out be-
cause now it's NHK via France at 17-19 UT.

USA "Squeal on WWCR - probably an easy fix.
Probably a bad capacitor in the exciter. The capacitors are used to pre-
vent crosstalk from occurring on the DC bus.
The DC bus usually feeds several circuits and these signals are getting
mixed and that is what you're hearing. Will only worsen over time. Pro-
bably just a 50 cent capacitor. Transmitter would have to be shut down and
exciter disassembled. They probably don't have a component level tech-
nician there that can do the work. And the manufacturer wants an arm and
a leg to do a board swap! So that's why we're hearing a squeal.

Mediumwave DX catches at 1850 to 1915 UTC at maximum or near maximum
eclipse at my location in the northeast suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia USA
with around 85% of the sun obscured was as follows:
1080 kHz KRLD AM, Dallas-TX long fades in out with eclipse coverage
(local co-channel WFTD-AM is off the air).
1120 kHz KMOX AM, St. Louis, MO weaker with slow fades in and out.
1100 kHz WTAM AM, Cleveland, OH mixing in with local WWWE, Decatur-GA.
1190 kHz WOWO AM, Fort Wayne, IN mixing (underneath) in with local WAFS,
Atlanta-GA.
Except for KRLD, the stations were fading in strongest when the eclipse
totality passed over head those cities. KRLD seems to quickly fade in dur-
ing totality in Dallas then linger for quite a while until fade out about
1915 UTC. Quite a residual eclipse ionospheric enhancement mid day for
KRLD. Note: All DX stations received are 50,000 watt stations.

culture radio in 25 meterband at 05.54 UT on April 11.
That's the channel on April 11th used the 4th Emirler FAULTY MODULATION
u n i t of Turkish Radiocom Emirler site park, send out the usual
w h i s t l e heterodyne squeal tone modulation.
Also noted a 1400 Hertz string visible on Perseus screen display.
At 05.53 UT the Turkish National Anthem played and sung by chorus.
INDIA 11804.784 kHz much oddity measured on New Delhi Kingsway bcast
center outlet, AIR now Akashvani Pashto sce to AFG target, S=8 in Doha
Qatar ME at 05.47 UT on April 11.
IRAN 11730.002 kHz IRIB via Sirjan site in Dari to AFG target, power-

FINLAND/EUROPE Friday 20 to Sunday 22 September, 2024
EDXC Conference in Tartu, Estonia.
Tartu is one of the 2024 cultural capitals of Europe. On Friday 20th,
a coach from Tallinn (leaving at 1300 hrs latest) is planned.
This will visit the Estonian Broadcasting Museum in Turi
(central Estonia).
Other bus connections are available e.g. from Tallinn or Riga. Flights to
Tartu currently only from Helsinki.
Conference presentations will take place on Friday evening, Saturday and
Sunday morning.
On Sunday afternoon a bus trip to Valga is planned (on the border of
Estonia and Latvia). Conference pricing will be moderate. Questions are
welcome, we would like to hear from all who plan to participate
