The new Twitter.com is here

Today, we are starting to roll out a new Twitter.com – a refreshed and updated website that is faster, easier to navigate and more personalized. The site has an updated look and feel that is more consistent with the Twitter you see on other devices, making it easier to access some of your favorite features, and with more options to make it your own.

  • More of What’s Happening: We’ve brought over Explore to bring you the same great content found in our apps; expect more live video and local moments personalized for wherever you are in the world. Get context with profile information within conversations and check out your Top Trends in any view so you never miss what’s happening.
  • Easy access to your favorite features: Bookmarks, Lists, and your Profile are right up front and have their own spot on the side navigation, making it easier and faster to jump between different tabs.

  • Direct Messages: Direct Messages have been expanded so you can see your conversations and send messages all from the same view. Now there’s less hassle switching between screens to send a message.

  • Account switching: Whether you have one profile or a few, now you’re also able to switch between accounts faster, directly from the side navigation; your stan, foodie and cat meme accounts thank you. Learn more

  • Make Twitter Yours: The love is real for dark mode themes Dim and Lights Out. You’ve asked for even more ways to personalize Twitter so we’re bringing you different themes and color options, along with two options for dark mode.

And, of course, lots more continuing updates:

New
  • Search: We’ve added search filters to the search results page so that you can filter results to only be from people you follow, and/or from nearby locations.
  • Tweets: Sometimes, we decide that it may be in the public’s interest for certain Tweets to remain on Twitter, even if they would otherwise break our rules. We're going to start using a new notice to make it clear when we make these decisions. Learn more
Updated
  • Tweet: You can now “Retweet with comment” on a tweet you’ve already retweeted. More chances to show your favorites even more love.
  • Tweet: The app should now refresh less often when you are in the middle of composing a Tweet.
  • Tweet / A11Y: Using the “J” or “K” keys to navigate timelines will now focus on the content in a more consistent place at the top of the screen for easier readability.
  • Navigation: Moving to or from certain pages should now have less flickering visually.
  • Navigation: Most action or overflow menus now include icons alongside each item.
  • Media: Media in DMs now looks more like media in Tweets
  • DMs: Failed DM messages can now be deleted or retried.
Fixed
  • Profiles: Suspended or otherwise unavailable users will no longer crash certain screens and can now be de-selected as a recipient when replying to a conversation they were in.
  • Profiles: Updating your bio when it contains a URL is now much easier and if you have a profile URL, it won’t disappear every time you update your profile, and now you have a little more room to type in your bio.
  • Media: Opening the gallery with data saver on should now more reliably load a larger photo.
  • DMs: Trying to create an unnamed DM group with a set of users you already have a conversation with should now correctly take you to the existing conversation instead.
  • General: Added a whole lot of polish around smaller bugs, this is that super general “minor improvements” part of the post.

New
  • Multiple Accounts: Users can now quickly switch between multiple accounts and view notification counts for all logged in accounts. Our Help Center has instructions on how to get it set up.
  • Quote Tweet:  You can now add images and GIFs when quoting a tweet.  Previously, if you wanted to Retweet with a comment you could only use text.
  • Moment Maker: You can now access and create moments from your profile’s Moments page.
Updated
  • Media Gallery: When opening the photo gallery, photos will now show up immediately, and the full-resolution will load after. This should make it feel much more responsive, especially on slower, cellular connections. Users of data saver will now not load the full-resolution, allowing them to view the uncropped version or zoom on it without consuming additional data.
  • Events: Added “Up Next” functionality on Event pages, now videos associated with the Event will play one after each other.
  • PWA: Improved the resolution of the PWA app icon, made it look better on certain Android devices.
  • Codebase: Reworked how linking is handled throughout the app, done through a team-wide Hackday. This change is largely invisible, but should improve the responsiveness of certain links.
  • Security:  We’ve updated our Two-Factor Auth to use FIDO2 WebAuthn protocol, which allows support for more browsers and authenticators while also retaining all of the phishing resistant capabilities security key-based 2FA provides. Only hardware keys are currently supported, with additional support coming later.
Fixed
  • Direct Messages: Fixed an issue where high resolution photos would always fail to send in DMs
  • Events: Events with long names now truncate much more nicely
  • Bug: Some click/press confusion within the App has been fixed

New
  • Design: Many users are seeing the new site and designs for the first time. Welcome! We hope you enjoy the faster experience. There’s lots of improvements coming every day!
  • Accessibility: Added a reduced-motion setting under Settings -> Accessibility. This will also respect reduced motion settings from your OS if set and supported.
  • Tweets: Quote Tweets can now be sent and consumed with additional media in them.
  • Profile: You can now set or update your birthday.
Updated
  • Display: The Font Size and Night Mode controls are now found under Settings -> Display

  • Moments: Allow deletion of moments
  • Accessibility: The input fields for adding alt text to images now grows a bit more

  • Scrolling: Fixed going back to a page sometimes returning users to the wrong spot. The intent is that you should return to the Tweet you left the timeline from.
  • Emoji: The guitar emoji now has the proper number of strings and heads.
  • Windows: Emoji should now have more personal space when they are next to other emoji.
  • Windows: Fixed clicks frequently not registering and instead causing text selection.
  • Tweets: Consistently show more items in the Tweet activity pages (i.e. Likes + Retweets)
  • DMs: Media will now stop uploading when you cancel sending a DM.
  • DMs: Fixed issues where DMs would occasionally fail to send immediately after attaching media.
  • Profiles: Fixed a halo that would sometimes appear around avatar images
  • RTL: Icons should now come before the text in a few more places throughout the app

  • Translations: Translations are now powered by Google, they can also be re-hidden after being shown

Updated
  • Profile: Changed from a settings icon to a kebab menu icon on profile pages since that menu has more than just profile settings.
  • Profile: We no longer truncate the account name on the profile page to allow parody accounts to be easier to identify

  • Profile: Follower and Following pages now have tabs to easily switch between them
  • Profile: Background color of avatars are now shown while they are loading

  • Bookmarks: There’s now an option to clear all your bookmarks at once

February 26th 2019

New
  • Timeline: The chronological timeline switch is now on for web! Click the ✨ at the top of your timeline to get your tweets in chronological order (or switch to the algorithmic timeline).  We will eventually switch you back to the algorithmic tweets after a while, but if you keep switching we’ll wait longer before changing it back.
  • Navigation (widescreen): We changed the icon for Explore from a 🔍 into a #⃣.  When in widescreen mode, there’s a search field on the screen, and having one 🔍 for Explore and another 🔍 for search was confusing. 🔍
Updated
  • Internationalization: Enabled our beta language support for Irish, Galician, Basque and Urdu.
  • Emoji: DM Groups and List titles now use Twemoji rather than native OS emoji for more reliable rendering
Fixed
  • App: There was a somewhat rare, almost impossible to reproduce, situation with UTF-8 character encoding that was causing the app to crash when loading. All files are now serving with proper encoding. Sorry Peru 😬
  • Events: Events that are not found show a not found error instead of the generic ‘Try Again’
  • DMs: The thing where the text input wouldn’t have focus when entering a DM conversation is better
  • Internationalization: Corrected the display of numbers and Tweet action icons (e.g. “55 Retweets”) in languages that read right to left.
  • Accessibility: The screen reader reads the Tweet when navigating the timeline with J/K keyboard shortcuts. Including the number of Replies, Likes, and Retweets. Ratios for everyone!
  • Accessibility: Social proof (e.g. "@Twitter Retweeted") now reads properly with screen readers
  • Accessibility: Improved handling of screen magnification
  • Accessibility: Added an aria label to the ‘promoted’ marker so the screen reader can tell when the Tweet is an ad

February 12th 2019

New
  • Direct Messages (widescreen only): The Emoji Picker is now available when you're writing a DM on your computer or tablet! Click the emoji icon to pop it open and express yourself 😜
Updated
  • Images: We are smarter about which image to show in the timeline based on the pixel density of the person’s screen.  The result is a faster experience on newer phones with high pixel density.
  • Image Cropper:  We’ve adjusted the zoom behavior when adjusting an uploaded image. It feels much more natural now.
  • Accessibility: The way a screen reader identified the emoji icon that pops open the emoji picker was vaguely labeled (‘Button’). It’s label has been improved and its purpose  is now very clear (‘Add Emoji’).
Fixed
  • Internationalization: Fixed the ordering of social proof phrases (e.g. “@Twitter Retweeted”) in languages that read right to left.
  • Stability: Adjusted the app reload logic to prevent the infinite reloads that some people were experiencing.
  • Scrolling: A bug snuck in that allowed pull-to-refresh to work in places that it shouldn’t have.  Pull-to-refresh is again properly contained.
  • Direct Messages: When sharing a tweet through DMs we weren’t auto-focusing the message text box, which made adding a message require some clicking. Focus should be automatic now.

January 29th 2019

New
  • Video: Events with a video will now pop-out the video and put it in the bottom corner of the screen as you scroll down to read Tweets.
  • Events: Added social context (‘8k people here’) to the events page to share the scale of the event.
  • Image Uploading: You can now resize and crop uploaded images for your Tweets and DMs.  Click the paintbrush icon on the bottom right after selecting an image to adjust the image (Profile image cropping is coming soon™).

  • Profile: Allow media carousel to scroll through more items. It was set to 6, increased to 20.
  • Profile (mobile only, for now): When viewing an account's Tweets, Likes, or Media we'll show the total count. It appears under the account name in the header, and changes appropriately as you navigate the profile.

  • Timeline: Scroll positioning now accurately accounts for the size of the top-navigation component.
  • Accessibility: Improved the screen readability of the composer at the top of the timeline.
