歩くために必要な脊髄神経の刺激を AI モデルに記憶させ、それを硬膜外から刺激としてインプットすることで、慢性完全脊髄損傷患者さんを歩かせるローザンヌ工科大学の研究についてはこれまで何回も紹介してきた。ただ、このような AI を用いる方法は、脳との結合が実現できないと、複雑な刺激が必要な手や腕の機能回復にはつながらない。このため現在でもなおリハビリテーションが機能回復にとって最も重要だ。
さて、この論文を読むまで知らなかったのだが、腕と手のリハビリテーションを行っているときに、経皮的に損傷部位に電流を流すことで、おそらく新しい神経をリクルートし、リハビリテーションの効果が高められるという症例報告が発表されていたようだ。
今日紹介するローザンヌ工科大学からの論文は、ARCex-therapy と名付けた経皮的脊髄刺激法を、６５名の患者さんで試した、より大規模な臨床観察治験で、５月号の Nature Medicine に

前回の記事から時間がたってしまいましたが、指と日本の伝統的格闘技、すなわち「大相撲」の関係について、ご紹介したいと思います。実はのんびりしている間に、大手ブログサイトで論文が紹介されてしまったり、研究チームのリーダーである大竹文雄先生ご自身がブログで紹介されたりしたので、研究結果の大枠について、すでにご存知の方も多いと思います。そこで、それらの記事で触れられていない、論文の細部、重箱の隅の味わい方をご紹介しようかと思います。

▼「ヒッグス粒子を追え」フランク・クローズ
この辺りの理論は知っていたが、発見のドラマの方について読んだのは初めてだったので面白かった。朝永らのくり込みの時代から始まって、標準モデルが確立するまでの過程を「無限大の問題」を軸にしてまとめたもの。原題は”the Infinity Puzzle”でこっちの方が内容を正確に表している。発売時期からしたらこう言うタイトルになるのは仕方ないのだろうけど。（ヒックス機構の発見者は少なくとも７人はいるという話はちゃんと入ってますが。）著者はオックスフォード大の物理学の教授。
この手の本を読む時は物理学として知っていることでも、説明の仕方に得るところがあるので、退屈でも読むようにしていたのだけど、この本についてはそういう事は無かったので物理について知っている人は物理の説明は読み飛ばして良いと思う。
普通の本はもっとドロドロした人間ドラマがあるもんだけど、この本は抑えめ。どうも、噂で流通しているバージョンには他の話がありそうだと、ほのめかされては
数理科学12月号
数理科学2014年12月号「場と力の物理イメージ」を読んだ。
特集ではなく、連載「フィールズ賞で語る現代数学」第三回「群と対称」が面白かった。例の有限群の完全分類はパワフルな学者がごり押しで解決したみたいなイメージを持っていたけど、結構紆余曲折があったんだなとか。それに群論というのは古典的に完成されているというイメージだったけど、頂点代数とモンスター群のような新しい話題が出る余地があるのだとか。
